There are many dif types of boxes you can buy and make. It all depends on the type of woofer, for the sound. Some woofers are required fopr sealed, and just sound better in sealed. There are types from simple sealed boxes, to band-pass, and ported. bandpas and ported boxes, IMO sound the worst. They will make a nice amount of sound and thump, but are very nasty. You could also make a complex deisgn, porting you sub. this would be in such a way, to make a series of passages in the enclosure. Wich will cause a relextive ocurance and change the decibles and depth of the sound. This is the design BOSE use , wich alows there 6" 80 watt woofers to sound amazimng. That however will take a lil more room, and some guess and test for the proper sound. I have made a cheap one for my 6" and it sounded nice, concidering i made it out of mat-board. The best way, to decide on wich box to use, is to look at manufactors recomndations. Hope this helps some, theres still a lot of info that i rpobley missed. I would say do a search on the web, for sub eclosure designs.

you can usually find specs on sub enclosures by doing a google search on the sub model itself. just did this the other night to find the cu.ft. i need for my two subs. u will more than likely find specs for sealed AND ported boxes specific for that sub. hope that helped?

if you check the manufacturers website they usually have the sub and a custom box they made "tuned" for that specific sub so that it will sound its best, but thats only if you want to buy their box- correct me if im wrong
