So I was coming home from work on saturday and there is a one lane mountain road that I use to get there.I take it all the time to go hom and out of nowere a 240 pulls up on my butt. so I hit the gas and so did he (it has been a while!). the road consistes of 6 back to back hairpin curves towards the end. when we hit those I said oh no I am finally going to see how good these cars are in the coners( I had not seen them in person). so I go in as fast as the celi will let me into the first turns. and the 240 gets on the side of me and I am like oh s**t he is going to pass me but infact he brakes before I do and I see him ( from my rear view!) taking the turns like a newbie and I lose him. then he catchs up to me and we end up talking at the gas station at the end of the road(me and him had no gas). anyway to get to the point he tells me he is into drifting and that he one of the best aound my are. here I am with a st front wheel drive and bald tires and I out handled a tune 240 with what looked like some who knew what he was doing(I tested his knowlege of course. I know I am not that good hell I need more pratice on moutain type raods but to me I should have been left in the dust don't you think? or is the 240 over hiped.

almost no matter how good of a driver you are he should have worked you over. you may have him on cornering (celicas are pretty good at) but theres no way that if he was anything of a driver you could have beat him. he SHOULD have had you easily, but its really up to the driver and the fact you were in front of course.
how wide was the road? -------------------- Former: 96 GT 5 speed (i/p/e) Fate- rear ended by mack truck

the road it 2 lanes one up one down and it is wide cause a metro bus goes on there. and you are right I was infront but I have 105 hp and I don't think I am that good actually I need to improve I am very hard on myself about drving I practice everyday and anytime I can but dose'nt a 240 have like 140hp or something? he could have passed me it was late at night and there was no one on the road for miles. I was going to buy a 240 but I saw what they were turning into and laid back and now I know I did the right thing. I love me celi with all my heart!

One thing is, 240's are turning into the next 240. Most kids that get them, think they can drive them. Its not that easy. My brothers buddie has one, that he would drift all the time. This was back in 96. An he was damn good too. But too many kids at least around here think they can drive, when they cant handle sheat..

if all these cars can "work" celicas, than why do we claim we have great handling?

A 240sx will out handle a USDM Celica... S13's handle great but have understeer tendancies at higher speeds similar to FF cars. S14's will kill Celicas. They are a bit heavier... but are very well balanced and are pretty neutral at higher speeds. Also... the FR layout has very distinct advantages in tight cornering situations cause they can simply power through things while FF cars typically experience understeer when punching the gas through a corner. Umm... IMO, the Celica is a "good" handling car. It's not "great" by today's standards. Standards are simply improving too much. The old DC2 Integras are "good" handling cars, "great" compared to 5th/6th gen MacPhearson Celicas. The New DC5 RSX-S are "great" handling cars as far as FF cars go as is the 7th gen Celica GTS. Miatas are great... Truenos are good... S2000s are great... S13 240's are good, S14 240's are good/great... MR2's are all great but the 2nd gen has a very high learning curve because of the weight and the torque.
Too many vairables... but yeah. A 240 will probably out handle a Celica based on power and drivetrain configuration in tight corners. I personally think Celicas are only good handling cars. The Super Strut versions, although I've never driven one... can be considered the "great" counterpart. IMO... they guy you raced through the canyons... probably doesn't know how to drive. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

A simple rule of thumb- 90% of the time an equal level playing field comparing a FF car to a similar FR, the FR will be the faster car through the corners... FF cars have the burden of having the same wheels provide the power AND make the car turn...

Did he actually drift, or did he take corners at high speeds? There are differences.. And 240sx, non Silvia, has approximately 155HP.. Well, USDM one's anyways..

the car doesn't make the driver the driver makes the car... if he was a good driver(diffter.) he would have taken you .... unless.. you are liying and you are a bluechpper... and don't think that a FrontWheel drive car can't easlly take out a RearWheel drive can on a curve...

didnt say how well they handled just that i was amazed that a car made in 1971 and sold everywhere in the US was good for something other than 1/4 mile and i meant my 260z should handle better than his 240z on a side note, i have another friend with a 1970 240z that has the same engine my 260z now has, he has 220 rwhp, with new shocks, bushings, coil overs, wheels, tires, rear sway bar and camber plates. it really cool to see him drive around the track, passing corvettes, vipers, WRX's, sti's, evo's, 300zx's, 350z's, etc. a lot of what makes new cars handle so well is tire technology. you could have the best suspension in the world, but stick on a 1970's set of tires and the car will grip like a 1970's car -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

my guess is that if he's as good as he says he us then the reason way he didn't pass you on the turn is because he didn't have enough space on the outside. If he would have "drifted" his nose would have clipped your rear end. Thats the only excuss I can think of which the more i think about it is bs because drifting came about through grip racing, if he would have jus stuck to the road and jumped lanes he should of had you. He's bsing. I drive an st, and my buddy and I have built a s14 to drift in compitions where I live. I've drifted it and through my experience with the car, im pretty damn sure he was just talking some ****

Not saying they can't... but FR cars have a very distinct advantage that is very difficult for an FF car to overcome. As for the Z cars... they can handle. They're proven track cars with over 30 years of history so they can hang with the modern day cars if modded right... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"
