You basically just cut it open and rip everything out. The benefit of this is less restriction on your air flow. So you get minor HP gains.

i know you loose the torque from the loss of back pressure, but why exactly does back pressure reduce preformance i'd think less restriction on you pistons would help, but then again maybe im just dumb |

i think if u did gut out ur cat, the hp u'll gain will in the higher rpms band where it will of no use, cause of the redline; unless u redline ur car to tap into the 2-3 hp u did gain.
just my thoughts |

Why would you want to gut your cat on a low hp car? The gains aren't that great to begin with. Dayam dead cats be hangin in there...

i have one cat removed and a piece of straight pipe welded in place of it, and the other cat right after the manifold, i gutted it. I noticed a small HP gain and a major cahnge in the sound of my exhaust. It sounds alot snappyer and alot meaner. In my state we dont have inspections so i can get away with it. So in my case if i had both cats regular in my car, and no inspections, they would be both gone with a quickness. Thats just in my own opinion though.

So do you need both or is one enough to pass inspection.
