Well heres the thing...I read a spec sheet (which Ive proven to be wrong from time to time) from Autotrader.com and it says we have a 15.9 gallon gas tank. I have filled up immediately after the light came on and I could only get about between 12-13 gallons in. Therefore...You should be able to push your car at least another 75 miles before filling up! I have gone 50 miles over with the gas light on and the needle was about dead on E. Its happened with both my ex ST and my current GT...So I think it was intended that way.

But it is nice to know. My girlfriend and I were test driving her civic and on our way home the gas light just came on and we were on the highway. About a mile later I tried to accelerate in 5th gear and it wouldnt respond lol. Lucky that there was a truckstop at the next offramp and I was able to accelerate in 3rd gear and lower. Moral of the story with the 96 civic EX...dont wait for the gas light. Celica, you can wait for the light |

well, I just wanted to know because my gas light came on and I knew the gas station near the exit I needed to go to had much cheaper prices than other gas stations. So I drove for about 13 miles with the gas light on and it was okay, and I was just curious how much farther I could've gone if needed.

I have pushed my celi for like 60+ miles after the gas light... and I still only ended up putting in 14 gallons, so thats atleast another 20-40 miles if you really really push it.

the gas light turns on when you start going into the reserve which I think is about 3 gallons. How far you can go depends on how hard you are driving but you should get in about 40-60ish more miles, but mind you that when you start running low on gas the fuel pump starts sucking up all the crap and gunk in your gas tank.

When you begin to see the light, you have approximately 2 gallons left.. It may turn on and off, becuase of the inclines and declines of the fuel levels while traveling on the roads or off roads.. But depends on your MPG, you may be able to travel about 40-80 miles..

dont push it.. i learned it the hard way. For 2 years I pushed my car to drive 400 miles on highway without refueling.. well this time i moved to the city adn well.. in the worst weather conditions somewhere going up the hill my car ran out of fuel or all of it was in the back of my fuel tank. Either way walking under a heavy rain when it is barely 32 degrees is not cool

I've taken it to it reading a full quarter under the E line- thats actually BELOW the E letter. I got 55 miles or so, then got scared and filled up.

Usually, it's better to fill up on the quarter line.. Otherwise you'll suck up stuff in the fuel tank, and risk clogging your fuel filters..
Edit(add): It may clog your fuel injectors too.. Ha ha. This post has been edited by Newbie: Jan 18, 2005 - 4:25 AM |

Your fuel pump that's inside the tank in cooled by gasoline thats inside. When you start running low it starts to overheat. It doesn't mean that you will blow up or anything like that - it just means that you could burn your fuel pump.
So even though it's a good thing to know how far you can push it, you better not do that too often. |

the gas in the tank is also there to keep your fuel pump cool, so if you drive with the light on a lot, you might end up burning out your fuel pump.

From my experience, thats only somewhat true. The celica and most toyota's I've driven always starts out with the light coming on and off. That tells me I only have 3 gallons left. When the light stays on, that tells me I have 2 gallons left. From my experience this is what I've found to be true. Cause even when the car is just sitting around it comes on and off. I've only noticed that in the toyota's though. My nissan never did that and my brother's honda doesn't do that either. |

Also, am I the only one whose gas light is on dimmer control? When I'm near empty, but a good quarter of a tank left, it'll on and off at about 25% of light intensity
1/8th of a tank later, and it's on and offing at full intensity, then 1/8th of a tank later, it's always on, but much dimmer. Finally, when it reaches the last mark and below, it's very very bright |
