I want to fit a Smaller sportier steering wheel to my ST202 (UK spec). It has a drivers and passenger airbag. If i disconect the airbag will I get a fault light on the dash? How can I remove the fault and will the passanger airbag still work. Someone has metioned putting a resistor accros the airbag connections to remove fault? Anyone done this before?

No, you will get the fould on your dash, but i dont know about the passenger air bag, will it still work... the easyest way to remove the fault - remove airbag bulb from the cluster..

An even easier way is to pull the SRS warning fuse from the enginebay fuse box... ;P As for the passenger side bag working... unless someone wants to test... can't really say if the SRS computer shuts down the passenger when the driver's bag is disconnected.

I was told when I wrecked my 1st one that everything had to be replaced. I guess that is why so many Celi's die in wrecks.

When i wrecked my bimmer in the summer or 03 mine worked fine, And it was a 1991 bmw. So I would not take out the bags. Also for what coomer mentioned. When i wrecked my bimmer, i wasnt sitting very close but I did grab both sides of the wheel and had my arms sliced up in 3 spots and were all red- then black and blue for about 2 months from the stering wheel ripping open and blowning up. |

Find the ratio of people who died in car accidents who didnt have an airbag to those who did.
I dont kno why this is a problem with airbags, although not saving EVERYONE they do decrease the severity of injurty and death. This post has been edited by Supersprynt: Jan 25, 2005 - 1:40 PM -------------------- |

I'm no that tall either, so I used to sit closer to the wheel until I got in my first accident; didn't break anything, but if I was going faster I probably would have from the airbag.
1) The airbag did save my life 2) I was sitting too close 3) if I was going faster, the airbag would have broken things but 4) if I was going faster with no airbag, I would have smacked my head on the wheel, breaking more things 5) now i sit further back; and i would never take out my airbags |

Most airbag fatalities happen because the person does'nt use the seatbelt like their suppose to, so when they are in a crash they get thrown face first into the airbag which is going in the opposite direction at 200 mph and with a force of 2000 lbs. Your neck cannot take that much pressure. So make sure you buckle up also.
Watch how fast one opens fully. http://www.highwaysafety.org/video/stabgmo.mov Airbags are designed to save lives and prevent injuries by cushioning occupants as they move forward in a front-end crash. By providing a cushion, an air bag keeps the occupant's head, neck, and chest from hitting the steering wheel or dashboard. To perform well, an air bag must deploy quickly and forcefully. The force is greatest in the first 2-3 inches after the air bag bursts through its cover and begins to inflate. Those 2-3 inches are the "risk zone." The force decreases as the air bag inflates farther. Occupants who are very close to or on top of the air bag when it begins to inflate can be hit with enough force to suffer serious injury or death. However, occupants who are properly restrained and sit 10 inches away from the air bag cover will contact the air bag only after it has completely or almost completely inflated. The air bag then will cushion and protect them from hitting the hard surfaces in the vehicle. This post has been edited by gas65: Jan 25, 2005 - 2:46 PM -------------------- |

Yeah,
Don't expect a factory seat belt to restrain you enough. I've got a scar right above my eye from my face smashing into a '00 Camry steering wheel, and I was buckled up properly. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

How do airbags work?
If you're involved in a serious frontal crash, you and all of your occupants will be suddenly pitched forward: your inertia (energy of motion) has you going the same speed as the car was before it hit. This results in injuries from colliding with the dashboard, steering wheel and inner compartment. However, the airbag, in conjunction with the seat belt cushions the impact by reducing your inertia at a slower rate. In the event of an impact, the mylar bag instantly inflates with compressed air, popping out of the steering wheel center or dashboard. This "airbag" acts as a barrier between you and the inner compartment while the seat belt holds your position for maximum protection. Are airbags effective? More than 2,920 people owe their lives to airbags. Driver deaths have been reduced by 14%; passenger deaths reduced by 11%. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, when combined with the proper use of a seatbelt, reduces the risk for serious head injuries by 75% (seatbelts alone have a 38% risk). Have people died from using airbags? Since 1990, 105 deaths have been reported. A majority of these deaths were children improperly placed in the front seat, with their head directed towards the deploying airbag (it fills with air instantly). Most of the other deaths have been attributed to improper seatbelt use or lack thereof altogether. The seatbelt holds you in place, away from the airbag deployment zone. It also holds you in the proper area for maximum protection. *Note: Airbags do not work alone! Are airbags on every car? Auto manufacturers are quickly including them on all of their cars, trucks and vans, making them a standard safety feature (required by federal law). Approximately 90% of all 1997 vehicles have one; by 1998 all vehicles will have them. Some manufacturers have met public demand for safety early, introducing them in roughly 60% of all 1996 vehicles. Your chances are much greater of living wearing a seat belt and having airbags than disconnecting them. |
