i have to press the brake pedal down ~ 2 in. before i feel resistance. is it like that for everyone? are my brakes not working correctly or are they just off adjustment?

Mine have a bit of leeway(sp) as well.

EDIT: You should check for air in the brake lines and bleed the brakes if you dont feel comfortable rolling around like that.

how do i check for air in the lines? my car has been like that since i got it, and im perfectly comfortable with it. i was just wondering if its just my car or a celica thing and if it hinders my stopping at all. when i press hard, my front wheels lock up but i dont think my rears do. its probly because of drums in the rear.

I havent driven any other celicas but I know mine does the same thing as yours. I'll try and find a "How-To" on bleeding the lines.

I would say if you or a friend or someone you know dosnt know how to bleed them right with you, then dont do it, you can screw your breaks up not doing it right.

There is a little kit that you can get at any local auto parts store that makes bleeding the brakes fool proof. If you really have to push hard or there is a lot of travel in the pedal with no response, you might want to check: Air in the lines(bleeding), wheel cylinders (calipers) leaking, and finally the master cylinder diaphram may be leaking. If you have no experience with brakes, and if bleeding them doesn't help, DO NOT do it yourself!!!

P.S. These are not the only problem areas, but can be visually inspected. Once again though, don't do it if you don't know what you're doing.
