OK, to all the car stereo geniuses,

I got myself 2 jl audio 12w7's. biggrin.gif I need an amp to push them. The problem is the subs are 3 ohms a piece. I know if you hook them up a certain way you can drop the ohms. Which way is it? Would it drop it to 1.5 ohms?

Im looking at getting an audiobahn a1500hct amp, it has
2000 watts @ 1 ohm
1000 watts @ 2 ohm
500 watts @ 4 ohm

It is a high current flow amp also. Will that automatically detect the ohms that the subs are running? And if it does, would it make it run at 1500 watts since its in the middle of 1 and 2 ohms?

Any help would be highly appreciated. Also, im currently in kuwait finishing my year term being deployed. Otherwise if i was home id go to a local installer and ask. Thanks alot to all that reply.

Don't bother with adiobahn. JL amps are great. They have a constant power rating and are 1 ohm stable. That would be my personal preference. You'll want to wire the subs in parralel in order to drop the resistance to 1.5 ohms otherwise you'll wire them in series and end up with a 6 ohm load.

Parralel:
all negative speaker wires are connected to the negative terminal of the amp.
all positive speaker wires are connected to the positive terminal of the amp.
End result: 1.5 Ohms

Series:
Positive lead from first sub connected to positive terminal on amp, then the negeative lead from the first sub will be wired to the positive lead of the second sub then the negative lead from the 2nd sub will connect to the negative terminal of the amp.
End result: 6 Ohms

EDIT:
JL Audio has a great tutorial about speaker wiring.

Yeah, JL has all the info you'll ever need to hook these puppies up, including what ohm the final product will be at. Dare I say, read the user manual? They're online in Pdf too.

why use such a crappy amp on such good subs? match them with a JL 1000/1 to each... or just use one 1000/1 on them.. also look at the Orion 2500 D.

yeah i had a 10w7 and it was so clean sounding and just pure bass.. i found when usually doing car audio.. its best to stick with one company.. because every part is meant to work with every other part.. and it just looks cleaner than also having 3 diff types of audio equipment in your car..

that isnt entirely true... if he had some crap like Boss and went all Boss then he'd be buying all new stuff soon.. tongue.gif . most people go with the same stuff for looks/to show off, but some go with all the same products because they are simply the best in their opinion. if he ran all JL he would be pretty happy. and every part in car audio is meant to work with every other part(different brands..etc..) unless noted on the product. i think a single 1000/1 would be fine, although they will be underpowered and in most setups the W7 needs a bit of power to do its business. so id use two JL 1000/1's but then he would Have to upgrade the alt.... decisions decisions decisions... its up to him in the end
