i forgot where i read it but is it true that a 97 ST's timing can't be advanced? i really want to do it but read somewhere i cant.

yep that is true cuz the 96 model celicas ans newer are equipped with obdII which doesn't allow you to change it. but you can get controllers like the btm by msd or even a piggy back system.
