When getting a 3sgte, especially a clip that will come with the awd tranny most of the time, swappers often have to get a transmission for their car, but I feel that this step is often overlooked a lot. As far as I know there is the camry tranny, the gt tranny, and the mr2 tranny, with or without lsd. (I think they are all the e153?)But, all of these trannys are not equal in gear ratios. The ratios in a transmission really decide how the power gets from the engine to the wheels. So the question is, which transmission will get you the fastest time in, say, a quarter mile? which has the fast accelleration in lower ranges? upper ranges?

Also, what are the advantages of a lsd? I know theses are kind of nub questions, but I can't find anything.

Thanks

Well from me talking to everyone at the shop, the camrey tranny, the GT (5s) and a few others are the only ones that will work. I have been told you cant use a mr2 tranny but I have yet to read articales going either way so I dont know on that one.

Im pretty sure that most toyota trannys have near the same gear ratio expect the Solara which has a higher 5th gear.

One that Note I am planning on using a Solara tranny and seeing what happens.

You can use a 5s tranny (Camry, GT, or MR2 n/a) you can use the MR2 turbo tranny (E-153) and it requires modification to work (convert to FWD & hybrid axles) you can use the Solara V6 tranny.

The gear ratios are NOT the same. The E153 has longer ratios which are intended for the 3sgte, the S-54 (5s trannies) have shorter ratios to utilize better acceleration with the less power. You will have a lower top end with the S54 but you will get there quicker than the E153 however the tranny is not as good. The LSD is a good addition to the E153 but not a necessity. It allows power to go equally to the front wheels helping decrease wheel spin which helps acceleration and it also helps in cornering. I would probably say that the GT tranny will get you a slightly faster 1/4 mile time, but its probably negligable.

I am going to try to use the 91-93 gts tranny for my swap I beilive it comes with lsd not sure but the gear raitos should be good on that one since the gts came with a the 3sge.

There are several revisions of the E153. The 91-92 MR2 Turbo tranny, the 93+ with and without LSD, the 92+ Camry V6 5 Speed, and the Solara V6 5 Speed. The Camry and Solara ones have a different final drive (taller) but the gearing is the same as the other E153's...

My opinion on the 1/4 mile is actually quite opposite of Super's... IMO, the E153 will yeild the faster 1/4 mile time because it lets the engine sit in its peak torque longer than the S54. The S54 will move through the gears faster, but the 3SGTE isn't really a top-end engine...

Could be an interesting experiment. I'm not exactly willing to put my 200,000mile S54 through a hard 1/4 mile to test it though before I switch to the E153 LSD.
