I was driving to school today with the AC off and it was a cool day (no up hill driving) and I noticed the temprature gage was rising past its normal 'half way mark' and it continued to rise until jsut before the redline, then it dropped again. This happened about 4 or 5 times, I pulled over and there was no sign of the engine overheating, has this happened to anyone?

anyone know what it is??

thanks

i'd check your thermostat, radiator, hoses and if you can get to itm the upper timing cover and look for seepage outta the bottom of the water pump...if you see any anitfreeze in there, you need a waterpump.

yeah, I'd first check to see if you have lost coolant. Do you know if your fans are kicking on or not. Usually it will only overheat if you are at a standstill. My guess would be thermostat. This lets coolant into the motor at a certain temp.

Mine did that right after I replaced the radiator and I was running it low on coolant to suck more in from the reservoir. Went a little too low...

Also check to c if ur fans are going off.

If its not low on coolant, replace the thermostat, sounds like its sticking closed. and use a good quality one, preferably a Toyota one,
the aftermarket ones dont seem to last very long. (and it only takes 1 good overheating session to screw up an aluminum head)

My car takes forever to heat up, does that mean my thermostat is stuck open? I just want to make sure before replacing it this week haha. Is there any harm that could be caused by the car running pretty cold all the time?
