Anybody have it? Problems, likes, dislikes, etc. What do you over-all think of the toshiba company, and where did you happen to buy your notebook. Thanks guys.

I have the M45. I'd have to say that I'm glad I paid the extra money to go for the Toshiba over the Dells and HPs. A few of the people in my dorm have had to send back their laptops to be fixed and I have yet to have a problem with mine. I went with the Pentium M processor, and then added another 512 MB of RAM. I think I paid about 300 more than most other people here on average, but I htink the quality is definitely worthwhile. The only other laptop I would get over the Toshiba would be a Powerbook G4.

My Toshiba laptop died (screen) a month after the warranty expired. I was going to renew it too. Repair would have cost more than the laptop was worth. It, along with an extra monitor, are a linux box now.

Toshiba is good, but for the most part as long as you stay away from hp and compaq(owned by hp now) you will be fine. Believe it or not i have heard good things about emachine's laptops despite them being so cheap. I would recommend at least 256mb of ram if your just gonna use windows nad 512mb if your gonna game because that will show the largest difference when it comes to speed vs cost.

HP / Compaq has really bad technical support. I work at a computer shop and I've encountered a lot of RMAs from Compaq laptops. Toshiba's a good brand. But personally, I'd prefer PowerBooks from Apple

If I were you, I'd stay away from Dell, HP, Compaq. Emachines is owned by Gateway now so they should be better, at least from what I hear they dont use refurbished parts anymore. Toshiba has been rising a lot in popularity so their price has been going up too. Sony and Apple's are way overpriced. Fujitsu is also crazy expensive, but awesome. Avaratec is supposed to be a good rising company. After looking around for a while, I ended up buying a Sharp Actius AL 27. Got it for $1100 new off ebay and i can say its def. worth the money. I bought it cause everything i've ever had that's made by Sharp has been reliable, but maybe i got lucky. The laptop I got is 64 bit though, and I think u should look for one that is too. Since everything will be 64 bit soon, u'll be prepared. Toshiba's are pretty reliable, just make sure you get what you want for it stock, because upgrading laptops later on is expensive.

As a web developer, I prefer Macs more than anything else. Even the god father of Linux has recently reported switched his main computer to a Mac. As to speak, Apple's OSX manages memory far more superior than ANY Microsoft Windows operating system. Plus since the OSX is built on Unix, you get all the back-end Unix barebone features (like Terminal to name one) plus all the fancy OSX gui. It's a must-have machine for web developers and it's a really handy machine for software programmers.
As for gamers, stay away from the Macs. Usually games come out at least half a month behind the PC version. Luggish 3D graphics support provides you with 10FPS in the newest games won't give you any fun at all. My Pentium III with ATi 9600 could out run ANY Mac G4s out there. Mac people love to brag about how they NEVER get hacks, NEVER get virus... etc. But the truth is, if I am a hacker myself, I wouldn't even BOTHER hacking the Macs, or coding Mac virus. The main complaints from PC users are how Windows XP always crash on them, blue screens every now and then, having a hard time searching for the correct driver for their hardware.. etc. It's good for the Mac users that they don't get any. Not because OSX is far better than Windows, but of the facts that OSX only has to support a small range of KNOWN hardware. As for Windows, they have the support a wide range of hardware that's dated back in the early 90s to the newest gadgets. A report on news.com stated that the upcoming Windows LongHorn could even open an excel file back in the 80s. I give mad props for Microsoft for doing this for us. As for price, I do think the Macs are overpriced (Like BMW compared to Kia), but I'm willing to pay for what they offer, from the highly detailed packaging to the slick hardware design to the ease of use and not have to worry about virus and hacks and so forth. Well, I think I'm bias on the Mac... but I love Windows still ![]() This post has been edited by tomazws: Mar 29, 2005 - 3:57 PM -------------------- |

My mom got a new dual processor G5 with the 20.1" widescreen LCD. That thing is insane, of course it costs like 8 times as much as my PC too. |
