I think most 3S-GTEs run pretty rich from the factory. I'm sure installing a cat would probably help though.

Did you try a tune up, and checking if the AFM is in good condition? AFM might explain why you run so rich.. Or the charcoal canister might need to be cleaned or replaced..

pull an injector? some people are nuts!
what fuel pump are you using and is your resistor pack hooked up? i think thats the #1 cause of running super rich at idle on a 3s. then put a cat in there and i think you may pass. ask your mechanic what he recomends. you can try making friends with the mechanic too. tell him all about your swap and how much time you put into your car, and the throw in "i never thought that it wouldnt pass. is there anything i can do to get a sticker? " most of these shop owners are car guys with project cars just like yours. you just have to relate to them on their level and show that you are a car lover and not somoene trying to bust them for giving out stickers. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

Think before you speak. If you don't know what is going on with the mechanics of a car, don't be so quick to insult. If you pull an injector and run the missions test, the car will be burning the fuel of 3 injectors instead of 4. Burning less fuel will lead to less emissions. This is only to be done for the E-test, when you're done, put the injector back in. |

I'm sure he knows what it does Junior, what he's saying is that there is a better way to pass b/c there might be something wrong. lol.
If it's running so rich that you can see black smoke, take a quick look at your throttle body. Your valve in the throttle body may not be closing all the way, causing the ecu to think you are pushing the gas pedal and will dump fuel. I apologize if it sounded like I was mad. I just don't think I should have been called nuts as if my idea is something stupid. I was simply providing a solution to pass an E test.

I just passed emissions with my 3sgte with the stock cat. The first time I went through it was running to rich and I failed a a couple catagories by a few points, so I poured a couple bottles of rubbing alcohol in my tank and I passed with no problem

Pull an injector!? Heheh... when you pull an injector, the engine essentially runs on 3 cylinders... rough idle, poor performance, miss-fires, etc. Who ever told you that... well... smokin crack. There are much easier ways to fix excessively rich engines.
As for your emissions... you have ZERO chances of passing smog without a cat. I don't know why you even tried to. ALL cars are filthy without a cat and will never meet emission standards. Putting in a cat might also decrease your CO, which tells how rich your engine is running. Mind you, 3SGTEs are almost always really rich... but depending on your readings without a cat, it may go down a bit. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

Yah if your somewhat close to passing a bottle or two of rubbing alcohol in a half tank of gas will bring down your emmisions, especially your NO. But like kwanza said theres no way your passing without a cat |
