I love the reliabilty of the 7A-FE and all, but I want something faster. I'm hesitant about getting a 1.6L engine, but hey, it has VVT and 20 valves. I wanted to know what's better, the 20V Silvertop 4A-GE or the 20V Blacktop 4A-GE? Which one has more HP, other specs, etc. I know Xpander has the silvertop. I wanted to know if the blacktop will be as easy to swap.

Also, I wanted to know why nobody has done a 4A-GZE swap? If Xpander did the GE, what's so hard about doing the GZE? Isn't it the same thing with a supercharger attached to it.

So that's basically it, because I know putting a 3S-GTE would be too much work and money, so I'd rather stick to my "A" series engine.

I want to stick with my Automatic 7A-FE tranny as well. Will it bolt right up the the 20V 4A-GE? What are the specs on the silver and black tops? and why is the GZE so hard to do?

Thanks! smile.gif

most of your questions can be answered here

http://www.club4ag.com

they info like power on black/silver tops 20v blue/red top 16v

i'll make it easy

step 1: click the link
step 2: in the top left corner click "tech Reference"
step 3: click 4A-GE 16V / 4A-GZE / 4A-GE 20V Specifications and ECU Data
step 4: click 4A-GE (Japan) 16V / 20V Specifications

then just search around in those areas biggrin.gif

The blacktop actually doesn't have VVT-i Bryan, just VVT. wink.gif

But yeah, Bryan is right about the silvertop being better for boost, if you decide to boost the motor later on. The silvertop's crank and rods are pretty strong...I've read that they're identical to the 4A-GZE, but there's quite a bit of disagreement on that subject. The blacktop has lighter internals, which allow for more horsepower in stock form or in a N/A tune, but won't stand up to forced induction as well as a silvertop 4A-GE will.

The 7A-FE auto tranny will bolt up, though I'm not sure if wiring will be a pain or not. However, I would highly recommend either not swapping in a 4A-GE, or converting your car to a five-speed. The 4A-GE gets all its power up high, and has very little torque down low. If you want to keep your auto tranny, I'd recommend a 4A-GZE swap because of the increased torque down low, though I don't know if any 4A-GZE ECUs came in automatic form. Bryan is currently swapping a 4A-GZE into a Celica, and it should be done soon. The mechanical part of the swap is similar, but some stuff, such as radiator hoses and vacuum lines and such, will be different, and wiring will be different.
