hi guys!!!!
i need your help. i have a 1998 celica gt with 86000 miles but the car seems burning oil . i checked today the oil level and i was two quarts below the normal and i just don't know why. my engine runs very strong but what could be wrong with it. fyi: when i bought this car i found a very small leak in one of spark plugs holes so i took it to toyota and that problems was fixed. do you think this has something to do with what is going on right know. thanks for your help!!! any suggestion about what could be the problem This post has been edited by monky32: Mar 31, 2005 - 12:39 PM |

when are u checking the oil after that engine has be one for a few minutes ? or when its cold?
deppending on the temp on the ening u will have diffrenet readings .... remebre o engine that has been running for a while .. will read as if it has less oil cause the oil has sprayed all around inside the eingen ... if it was bruning oil u will notice that the coior of the oil goes from clear to black faster then normal ... -------------------- |

It could be a number of things. Leaky drain plug gasket, leaky valve cover gasket, leaky distributor gasket, bad head gasket, leaky oil pan gasket... I'd stay away from the dealer. Whenever I see drops of fluid on my garage floor I just take it to my mechanic and have him find whatever seal is leaking and replace it. Just check your phone book for a toyota specialist. You typically won't get robbed like you will at the dealer. The dealer always tries to talk me into some bullsh** I just had replaced or replaced myself! And half the time I discover the guy doing the talking at the dealer isn't even a mechanic!!! (Note to everyone: I had those experiences at Toyota of Santa Maria out in Cali. Every time I went in there it was a complete joke.)

mac i checked my oil when my engine was cold and showed that i had just barely a quarter of oil which doesn't make sense because i checked the floor for oil spots and i didn't find any. when i got my car had 60000 miles and i've been using syn oil since plus i don't race my car so i just don't understand why this is happening.
thanks for your replies!!!! |

Wait... a quarter of oil? Dude, the dipstick Lo to Hi range only covers about a quart of oil. If it is pegged on the bottom edge of Lo, then you are only one quart low. Just because it hits Lo doesn't mean you're running dry. It means you've burned one quart. |

I hope you don't have any "quarters" in your engine. They weren't designed as a coin-op machine. Anyways if the oil line is right at "low" on the dipstick it's safe to say you are one "quart" low. If you have time let it set for about 15-30 minutes after you fill it with that one quart and you'll see the results on your dipstick.
