I know im going to get a hugely biased opionion from this place, but im looking at getting a used car and the Mk 6 celica is the highest on my list. But when i can get a 2000 model Lancer a the same price as a 1997 celica it puts my mind into a questionable state.

Some other cars im looking at:
:Honda Civic
:Mazda MX6
:Honda Prelude
:Nissan Pulsar
:Mitsu Lancer
:BMW 318i

so what does the celica have over these?

:Honda Civic - You`ll get instantly labelled a "ricer" wether its deserved or not, common as muck. Tunable, lots of aftermarket stuff.

:Mazda MX6 - Girls car

:Honda Prelude - see Honda Civic. bigger engine with less potential IMO

:Nissan Pulsar - Reliability issues, but alot of car for the money if you get the GTi-R

:Mitsu Lancer - If you can get an EVO go for it, others are slowwwwww.

:BMW 318i - Slow n common.

so what does the celica have over these?

Rarity, style(just look at some of the cars on this site), GT4 will leave you grinning like an idiot. Limited tuning goodies but they are out there when you know where to look. Rally car Heritage. Nothing else quite looks like them. bullet proof Toyota reliability.

Thanks for the response. And i love the gt4 to peices but im yet to find on in g6 form for under $20k
So instead, i was thinking about getting an sxr ad abs brakes (if thats possible) and get a gt4 kit. Sure it would be a far cry from the real deal but its as close as i could getfor a while.

On a side note, how are the gt4 motors in terms of effiecency? I get 7l/100k in my 89celica 2L

:Honda Civic - damn good milage and reliability. But do you want to have the same car as everyone else, and be slow ?


:Mazda MX6 - looks like a sperm, and not as reliable.


:Honda Prelude - more expensive, heavy as all hell. Is qucker and reliable though.


:Nissan Pulsar - older and you'll sink $$ into fixing it.


:Mitsu Lancer - Reliability and doesn't hold value. Looks nice though


:BMW 318i - Expensive, $150 oil changes, if you have any problem be prepared to spend thousands at the BMW dealership to be fixed. Heavier and slower


Zoiks - the prelude has HUGE potential, sorry to say you're wrong.~ 195 STOCK, and it turbos well. Anything has potential if you're creative enough.

You dont buy a GT4 if you want an efficient motor, I get about 300 miles to a tank max, and thats with carefull off boost driving, If I take it for a thrash I`ve had as little as 170 miles from a tankfull rolleyes.gif

Little difference here kid . 4-8K for a celica. . versus 13-25K for a supra. It's not like a couple grand more here kiddo. a little bit out of his price range

Hey folks,

Hope you don't mind me chipping in my two cents. I've been visiting 6gc for a long time on and off now, gathering bits of info and admiring celi's along the way and now I've decided to become a member. I've been into Japanese performance cars, particularly Toyotas since I saw an ST-205 for the first time as a kid. I want to reply to this topic in particular as I've done a lot of soul searching over what vehicle I'd like, changing my mind many times. I was even planning on getting a Suzuki GSX-R 600 (bike) at one point, but it's all come full circle again and I'm back into 6th gen Celicas.

Anyway...

Honda Civic or Prelude - Honda is well known for their reliability, and tend to be very economic. Only problem I can see is the effort required to make your car look unique, you'll probably be against some stiff competition on that front. But taken on their own merit, they're perfectly fine. Honda aftermarket parts are EVERYWHERE.

Mazda MX6 - Honestly couldn't comment. The only Mazda that really peaks my interest is the RX7. On the rare occasions I've seen an MX6, they've looked ok though. If it was me, I'd rather go for a Nissan 200SX (240SX for the US) over this, but that's my opinion.

Nissan Pulsar - Don't think they look as good as some, but some GTi-R's have been made to go very quick.

BMW 318i - I'd have to agree that cost would probably be the issue here, rather than any real problem with the car itself.

Mistubishi Lancer - EVO? Yes. Lancer? Not for me, thanks.

Toyota Celica - Toyota also have a reputation for good reliability, much like Honda. The 6th Generation Celica's looks are still fresh stock, despite being round since 1994 (though I definitely prefer the later, face-lifted versions.) Put the right bodykit on it (if that's your scene), and it will look fantastic. Chances are there aren't many really nicely done Celicas in your area, so you stand a better chance of seeming unique.

With the Celica, if you're planning on modifying the performance you'll need to think what sort of power you're looking to put down before you buy, as it will effect whether you should be looking at an ST/GT or a GT-Four. With the GT-Four, it should be easy and finding parts shouldn't be an issue. With the ST/GT, you can still make improvements but you'll have to work that much harder.

Well, that's my opinion. Ultimately buy whatever you think fits the bill the most. Do you want looks, fuel economy or performance?

Hey Dr. no need to make things personal here. He could be talking about a mk III supra (which are plenty affordable), so let's everybody just relax and give the guy some sound advice without the hostility. Trash talk like that doesn't make our community look like a fun one to join.

On the issue of whether or not to buy, you can always find an affordable 6th gen GT and with a little extra you can put the GT 4 front end on it and keep up with some good mileage and a hot looking car. Just about everyone in this community has mods like that in mind, it's just a matter of turning the car into a long term hobby which can be very rewarding (but a little bit costly). Oh, and one more thing: in my opinion, the 6th gen celica interior is one of the nicest ones for the price paid! Good luck, and welcome!

how much is a 3sgte by time ur done buying it and putting it in and tuning it?? then upgrading the hell out of it?

i would have rather saved and got a supra. payed 8k for the celica then dropped god knows into atleast another 5k. ive seen the most recent supras for 12-16k minor problems with them like cracked fender or sumthing stupid.

but for ur price range just get the celica cause its gangsta.

but you don't have that 12K up front so it's not realistic, even if you did you have no money to mod your car, your insurance is sky high and your gas milage is down, whats the fun in that ? Appreciate the celica for what it is, I do.

thats just normal price for an install of a 3sgte 2nd gen. 225 hp version.

yeah, i have looked at supra's and i love them to bits, but seriously they are not practical for me at the moment. The model i want is too expensive for me, the insurance is way to expensive and im thinking the economy wont be too good. Also there is more supra's then celicas where I live.

At the moment economy is more important ten power. But as long as it has more poke then my current '89 celica ill be happy.
