So i've been doing a good deal of thought

doors weight TOO MUCH
hence i've thought about making my doors fiberglass
and maybe having them C/F wrapped for good looks

the shell of the should be easy for me to make since its make a mold of the door
then create 5 layers inside that...
the rest i'm a lil worried about is the strength issues and such?
any opinions

well they already make cf doors
which alot of the time are f/g cores wrapped in c/f

and if you run a x brace or sumthing like that on the inside you can still save a ton of weight while being sum what safe since f/g will shatter anyways
but my entire front is made of f/g lol

hmm maybe a future project that i'll put off for a while

It would be a safety issue but there is always ingenuity. The main reinforcement of the door is the frame itself and not the metal (skin). The skin itself is actually quite thin and easy to penetrate.

You could design a door using the stock frame and then have a PROFESSIONAL welder (I talked to my uncle who is one of the best welders I know always doing the impossible and he said the idea is more than feasible) make reinforcements behind youre fiberglass skin. It would provide the safety you need and let you be creative with your ideas.

Just a thought to roll over...

Internal bracing should provide more than enough strength and safety to the doors. Hell, you could probable make them even stronger than the stock ones. Sure the fiberglass would be destroyed, but if you put some steel supports and maybe some foam in there, it would probably turn out great.

yes but the skin weights nothing really
and its not to redesign the door
its to save weight is the main idea

This CF thing is way out of hand. The only thing that is CF that looks good is the hood. The rest looks like you went to the junkyard and got a door, gas lid, mirror, or hatch off a wrecked car and were to redneck to paint it to match your car.

Besides that, if someone t-bones you, you are dead.

Actually weve already discussed safety is not the issue because he would not be removing the frame or structural support of the door in anyway.

While I am not a fan of "carbon fiber-anything" myself, to each is own, and everyone has their likes and dislikes.

------------------------------------------------

If the goal of the project would be to lighten the weight of the door, I would not even go to the length of the trouble of the project. I could see spending all the time and money if you wanted to do something to redesign the body of the car, but if its just for weight reasons I myself would not go to the trouble.

Do let me know what you decide, I am quite interested in this idea of yours and if you do proceed with it how it will turn out biggrin.gif.
