How did everybody here get into mechanics, bodywork, electricals or whatever? Did u read that stuff up on the internet? or were u raised by car lovers? Just wondering and curious to know how everybody gets their knowledge of cars.

i was always into cars. i think i had like 500 hotwheels cars when i was young. always worked on the cars with my dad and he used to take me to this shop where his buddy worked. so i guess its in the blood.
my friends make fun of me b/c i can tell a car by the sound of its engine. This post has been edited by Jdog1385: Apr 18, 2005 - 11:34 AM |

I never liked cars that much until I bought one, then I started working on them all the time with my friends. I don't know a ton about them but I could do pretty much anything on a car if needed.

QUOTE(asg14 @ Apr 18, 2005 - 2:22 PM) No one I knew was into cars growing up, so i don't know how I got into them. Almost all of what i have learned has been from ToyotaNation since August ditto, TN has helped me a lot. Also, just taking stuff apart and hoping I can get it back together, trial by error. And my dad was a hot rodder back in the day so he's fascinated by quick little 4 cyl. rice burners. All my friends are into cars as well, so it's just kinda learn as u go, hang out w/ people and make connections. -------------------- White 93 Mr2 Turbo

I started as a kid making sidecars out of bikes, then we made a go-cart out of a lawn-mower engine. My older bro was drag racing cars out at Van nuys blvd when it was the spot, and i can remember being a little kid and hearing about cams. Then I got into motorcycles, first dirt and ended up road racing at willow springs on a honda f2, but a couple of crashes showed me how expensive it was too race. Iv'e always been around tools, and have a pretty well equipped garage right now, and my tool box at work is taller then I am. I presently work as a aircraft technician for Az biggest aerospace company. I love my job, it pays very good, but the best thing about it is the amount of skilled people I work with. We got welders, machinist, mechanics, etc. I hired some when I did my custom lambo doors. I often visit the machine shop or sandblasters late at night when nobodys here. The internet has helped alot as I got older, and this site has answered many questions when I first got here. I am also a firm believer in investing in factory manuals for you car. they are worth the 100 bucks or so.
So in a nutshell, I came from a mechanically inclined family, but trial and error helped alot. As far as body work, hands on and i got about 14 video tapes on fiberglass, molding, etc Those have helped alot. |

I really have no knowledge of cars. Everything that I learned is from having friends help me with it and learning from them. Mechanic wise, I don't know a torque converter from a fuel pump. i can do simple wiring and have become quite skillful at removing my bumpers fenders and side skirts. Other than that though I'm clueless lol I must confess, I don't even know how to drive a manual, well, I can but it takes me a while to get the hang of it.

I don't know mechanics at all, but I learned bodywork myself from reading online and then trying stuff on my $400 fourth gen. Celi.
With the electrical, I've taught myself everything I know as well from reading online. No-one in my family is into cars except for me. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

my dad tought me the basics, and I just grew from that, reading stuff online, or just talking to other car people. Electrical stuff I learved from my uncle and from the net as well, but mostly from a trial and error kinda thing, I learned a lot from the frist car I ever owned, a 88 civic HB, I did a lot to it and then re-did a lot to it, you dont really know anything untill you try if for youself, you can learn just as much from a failure as a succsess.
working on cars or anything takes an ability to figure things out, you have to have the "nak" for it, or you lost. no book can tell you exactly what you need to know, they can only help guide you, the rest is up to your abiltiy to figure it out for youself. i was born in a mustang and raised around them.
then i went to school for a couple years for engine work. im learning fiberglass and body work by looking at pics and watching others do it. I can watch someone do something and then be able to do it myself. thats how i learned to do stereo installs. -------------------- Jared Harwell

I play a lot of Gran Turismo so I know everything...lol. j/k
I was raised in a drag racing family and mostly around American muscle cars until my cousin bought a CRX Si and I started into imports. I started as a shade tree mechanic replacing belts and hoses, to rebuilding V8's. My favorite of all is my grand parents front wheel drive 4.9 litre Cadillac, there is something about a front wheel drive V8 that's just mystifies me, like why? and who was smoking what? |
