ok, so i found some 18" rims a great price, but now i cant find tires for them without being in the highperformance super high prices and wont work in snow tires..... i dont need high performance tires, just something that will handle normal driving. i like the good year tripple tread, but they only go up to 16's, and are all like 205/60/16R.....the wheel is 18x7.5....not sure how wide of a tire i need then....is that 225? or around there? and im looking for something like 225/45/18R....but i dont have alot of money, and dont want to pay $150+ a tire...

Those are too big IMO. The overall diamter of the tire is 2" larger than stock. Your speedometer would read almost 10% off and your gearing would be materially affected.
If you are looking for budget, I would go Khumo Ecsta ASX in 225/40/18. $100 from tire rack. A better option would be Pirelli P Zero Nero in 215/40/18. $130 from tirerack. -------------------- QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this. |

There is a search function to this board in the upper right corner of the main page and each of the forums. It is very helpful.
To answer your questions, The difference between 225 and 215 is 10 centimeters in width across the tire (from outside to inside). The biggest difference in overall diameter comes from the profile. The 45 refers to the percent of the width. So a 225/45 has a total profile of approximately 101.25 cm while 225/40 has a total profile of 90 cm. Looks are subjective but in general, the lower the profile, the better the looks. The tradeoff is ride harshness and possibility of damaging your rims. You usually dont have to worry too much about damage until you get below 40 (unless you hit a huge pothole or go off a curb). You can get the speedo corrected by replacing the guage faces (www.speedhut.com will make custom guages - approx $150) or you can have it recalibrated by a technition. I dont know much about recalibration because I have never researched it. Hope it helps. Please learn the search feature. Jay I've looked into recalibration and my mechanic says it's next to impossible on a Toyota without having some kind of custom gearing mechanism built for it. On domestics, it used to just be a one gear swap, but on our cars it doesn't work that way. |

try tirerack.com and check the fuzion hri (by Bridgestone/Firestone) they are probably the best tire at their price point. I just bought a set for my 16" 7th gen celica wheels and they drive well for an H series all-season tire.

I hear it over and over again Ive got a set of Yokahoma es100's all around and they work great. They are awsome in all weather conditions. They were 90 a wheel for a 205/55/16 set up. |

dunlop is poop...i have 3 different models on my sets of wheels. The SP Sport 8000's / 9000's and FM901's and they all suck! I also have a set of Wanli tires and like those ALOT! Kuhmo 711's are SO SO... I would rather go with Kuhmo 712, kuhmo ASX, new Fuzions, wanli's or hankooks for some decent cheap tires.
