I am sean wood and i am from southern orange county, california. I started out being a honda kid and got into trouble with the law and had to get rid of my car. I have fallen in love with the 6th gen. celica and i am lookin into getting a 99 GT. I am not to sure about any of this because i came from honda so i need help. What is the differents in the GT and the ST? What engines can i swap? Is there a JDM type of the car? what is good suspension? what would be a main company to go by? (honda has spoon, mugen, stuf like that) Wheels, bolt batterns? What could i do to make decent power for a nice handeling daily driver? and most of all, anyone know where i can get a decent 6gc around here? post me back or AIM me: "ThisistheWood"

first, welcome. second, check the stickys at the top of the different forums (engine, suspention, exterior styling) for good information and answers to lots of your questions. There is also lots of info on the main page here and here, parts database
if you are looking for a 6G, check the buying/selling forum, there is usually someone selling one from time to time. a 99GT is a good choice, I don't think you would be disapointed ![]() -------------------- |

Heres the thing you will be disappointed with. Honda is well supported in the aftermarket scene, Toyota Celicas are not. Besides the 7th gen, Celicas have basically no aftermarket parts. There are some, but compared to honda is pittance.
There is always a japanese version of the car, however unlike Hondas, Celica parts are generally expensive, and engine swaps actually require some work. You have to change ECUs in these cars. I kno alot of honda swaps that dont change ecu's not even when they go from nonvtec to vtec. There really is no company like Spoon, Hondata what have you, thers TRD which offers little parts and Tom's maybe offers a part or two, aside from that, zip zero. -------------------- |

I am suprised i got a response so fast. Everyone on honda-tech are all haters. All my buddies work at this shop called Neu-Art and my buddy can hook it up with some custom fabbed stuff so im happy about that. Do any of these engines come in VVTL-i? or is that just a 7th gen thing? can u swap heads?

Do any of these engines come in VVTL-i? or is that just a 7th gen thing? can u swap heads? as far as I know vvtl-i was a 7th gen thing because they recieved an entirely new series of engines. honda-tech was a horrible site, I hated going there for advice when I had my Prelude. always telling you to search and never answering questions, even when it would be shorter to answer than to flame about it. Custom-fabbed stuff is your friend with Celicas. The few things that are available for it are played out I think because there aren't many options. As for swapping heads, I think an entire engine swap would be easier for the ST. I'm looking into a 3sge swap for my GT sometime in the future, or who knows while I'm at UTI next year I could dream up something completely different. As a side note, I like this forum and everyone on it. Everyone is helpful and awesome and I've learned a lot about my car through it, and I know if I need help there will always be someone with advice or a new idea. -------------------- 1999 Celica GT

If you get the last gen BEAMS 3sge you can have vvt-i but not vvtl-i but it is better than nothing if you want to go down that road. oh and I was also on honda tech when I had my integra those guys did not help at all but I find this site helps you alot and the people on here are great.

Welcome! What kind of Honda did you have, and what sort of modifications did it have? What kind of mods would you want to do to your GT if you got one?

I have a feeling i am going to like this thread, i like it already.... Uhh well i had a green 98 civic coupe. And i threw a B20 in there with an LS head. Just had intake and 2 1/4 inch piping. The motor made 135 horse 145 ft-lbs torque. (just this the GT... weird) it had black rota slip streams, dropped on tein s-tech springs (did a ****ty job on the suspension big mistake, never do a half ass job again) i got an exhibition of speed ticket soo i sold it and now my record is clean and im driving a damn volvo 850 turbo, its a quick soccer mom car but it still is a soccer mom car and i miss my old canyon runs. For the GT i am lookin into getting (which is a 99 with 105 k 5 spd hatch in pasedena) i want it to look like a GT4, so the bumper, wing, i think im gonnna go with the 7th gen wheels, and i need to do some research on the engine but either the MR2 turbo engine or the JDM GT4 motor (forgot the code). im really excited for the GT and i should be getting it in a month or so, so well see. Any input on the motors of choice?

Sounds like a good plan. Research the JDM ST185 3S-GTE swap...it's the most common and yields 225 horsepower in stock form.

ST185 3stge (2nd gen) are usually the motor to swap. They are in the all-tracs and produce some good HP numbers. They are the most common to swap because they are available in the US. The 3rd gen ST205 3gste were only availble overseas and parts would have to be from Japan if you need something.
check here at the stickys for better info -------------------- |

For the record, selling your car does not clear your speeding tickets, it'll still show up when they SCMODS you.

Seeing as no one answered about the wheels, I'll take a stab at it:
Wheels: stock is 7.0JJx15, 5x100 pattern, +38 offset I believe, with 205/55/R15 87 V tyres (You can use the miata tire calculator here to check to see if a given tyre/wheel combo will change your spedometer). 19" is pretty much that maximum size you can fit. You wouldn't want anything too big anyway; the rims would dwarf the tiny brakes and it'll look a bit weird. -------------------- ![]() |

As far as total aftermarket the Celica is the definitly a bastard child, I think it's one of the only imports to come out of the '90's with hardly any support. As you know already there are some good options though, the 3S is basically the 2JZ of the 4 cylinders and it has a ton of aftermarket support and is a great base. The 5S is a Camry engine so it actually doeasn't belong in the Celica, Toyota couldn't get the 3S to pass emissions so they rushed and threw a crappy engine in it, it's got potential but there aren't many people that go for it since the 3S is an option. Think of it like this if someone said you came have a D16 to work with or an H22 what would you prefer. As far as 3S aftermarket you have Tom's, Trust, HKS, TRD, Greddy, AEM, etc. You also have stroker kits avalible and if you have deep pockets building up a 5SGTE would be a good choice, since you get the benefits of an aluminum block, yet aluminum isn't that great for turbo applications since it heats to easily and the stock cooling system might not be up to the task.
