Fryed speaker?, 56k beware Options

i was going home 2day and my radio turned off (still had power just no sound0 at first I thought someone put it on mute or somethin, but then i turned the volume and no sound. Then it started to smell almost like nail polish. I think I either fryed the wires or my speakers, im hoping it was the speakers. So, any advice would be greatly appriciated. Also, is there anyway to test out what might be the problem without removing my radio o speakers. Im gonna check the fuses tomorrow and hope one of those blew, but I doubt it. Thanks guys.

just found somethin interesting... I turned my car off for about 30 mins, then turned it on again, and the speakers came on, played music for about 5 seconds and then quit again, so i dont think they are fryed, has any1 ever had this problem?

could be wires touching and melting... check your connections on the back of the HU...

i could be wrong, but maybe a loose ground or loose connecting wires? if they play temporarily and then quit, mayb the wire connecting to the back of the speaker is loose

The metal thing is for an antenna, but its a different connector than what plugs into your radio, my bros car has the same thing goin on. But like red94 said, check your ground, and while your at it, redo it. If i had to guess what the problem is, it would be a bad ground. Blue is usually a remote wire, and red is usually power.

everything still works, except no sound comes through, only every now and then something comes thorugh, usaully when I start my car. Thanks for clearin a few things up btw. Also, where would I start checking for bad grounds? At the speaker itself? THats the only thing I can think ok :*-(

The ground wire coming off the HU. Should be a larger guage black wire (probably the same size as the power wires which are red and yellow.) Run it to a good spot on the chassis (solid metal, unpainted, etc.) So its working when you start it out of all the speakers, then cuts out totally with the HU still on? Maybe your HU is overheating. Try replacing the fuses in the back of the HU, and make sure there is an inch or two behind the heatsinks in the back.

I dunno if its over heating b/c last night my car was off at night for about 3 hours, i turned it on and for 15 seconds it played, then shut off. I had the radio for about 2 years now and its never really given me any problems. hmm... where is the fuse located (generally)? Im assuming its inside of the HU itself, but I checked the standard power fuse for the radio, its not blown or anything. The only thing I can think of is the speakers are grounding out somwhere or the wires have crossed.

Maybe you've got a loose crimp somewhere. I'd definitely clean up that wiring and solder all of your connections.

Do you have a factory amp?

im assuming I have the factory amp (im not even sure where it is but I never replaced it) and I will probably clean it up sooner or later but its a pain in the ass ya know. I'll probably just take it to my friends shop (he does car audio for a living) and let them mess with it, but I really hope I can figure out what the problem is.

put all the stock plug back & get pulg harness for autozone or some where that way you cant go wrong....

Fuses are in the back of the head unit, generally near where the harness goes in. If its been working for 2 years, then you probably had the amp bypassed, or it wasnt there to begin with.

the factory amp for 6gc is located underneath the a/c panel. remove the shifter knob, take off that plastic piece with the shift boot attached, and unscrew the 2 screws holding the a/c trim piece and remove it. if you see a silver box beneath the a/c panel, you have a factory amp. another suggestion...maybe the amp is overheating or a wire is loose from or to the amp? check all of the connections to and from the amp...because correct me if im wrong but i believe this factory amp goes to all of the 4 speakers, and if all four keep cutting out, i would at least check the amp also.

I thikn I will give that a shot, i'll take some more pics also, maybe you guys will see something I dont, I thikn I am gonna clean up the crimps a bit more, just gotta pick up some heat shrink tubing from radioshack today. But maybe it is the amp, im hoping there is just something lose :-p

i checked all the harness and everything is fine, no lose wires or anything. Maybe the amp is just blown? No fuses are blown or anything. Maybe the wire is just lose on one of the speakers and its causing it to drowned out? Could I just plug in some speakers with rca jacks on the back to make sure my deck is still workin?

If there is a factory amp there, it should be bypassed so the speakers are running off the HU. The rca jacks are low level, they are used for an amp, not speakers. Did you check the fuses with a multimeter? See if you can find a different deck and check if that works.

edit: If one of the speaker wires is grounded out, that can cause the problem youre having. Try disconnecting one speaker at a time at the harness and see if they kick on at any point.

The metal bit (the antenna connection)...DO NOT LET IT TOUCH OTHER BITS OF METAL!!
Basically,if the metal tip of it and the metal housing of it are both touching a bit of metal (say for instance, the cage of the stereo), then you will see sparks and things will start melting!

There should be somewhere in the back of your HU for the antenna to connect into. if there's already something plugged in there, then i'm not sure how your system is set up, though that is definetley an antenna connection.
