I would be extremely careful machining down an OEM flywheel. They have a tendancy to break up at high rpm causing serious damage.
Much better to get a custom made one IMHO.

That's still a ****load of angular momentum. Trust me, you do not want a flywheel disintergrating at speed. It's like a frag grenade.

how much does a lightened flywheel help with acceleration/hp/reving? And how much does installation cost? I assume that most people couldn't DIY?

A light flywheel will noticeably improve engine responsiveness, essentially increasing acceleration speed. Its effects are something like static weight loss... It doesn't really *add* hp or anything like that. Also, I wouldn't get a 2 piece like most of the Fidanza/Clutchmaster flywheels. 2 piece flywheels can wear and fall apart under stress. My cousin blew one up in his Civic a couple years back, successfully destroying his tranny and engine. Just IMO...

As for install... expect it to cost as much as a clutch install. The work is basically the same.

i imagine a one peice wouldn't be as light as a two peice because there has to be a steel friction surface...if the flywheel is made of aluminum, the second peice would have to be a steel surface bolted to it. I installed mine myself..but, i had access to a lift, it would be harder on jackstands, but still do-able. Installation is exactly like a clutch with the addition of taking off the flywheel (eight bolts on a gt, six on an ST) and putting on the new one...io would suggest raplacing the clutch if you are close to neediing a new one so you don't have to do it twice/ pay for it twice.

I've just bought one of these -

user posted image

Chrome-Moly Flywheel weighing approximately 4.2kg. That's 300g lighter than the equivalent two piece wheel that you can get. It's also lighter than the clutch plate and cover combined too!
Picking it up when I'm over in Oz next week.

It's from here - http://www.xtremeclutch.com.au/products.htm#

$400 is gay? Wonder how much it'll cost to repair a car whose flywheel has broken up at high rpm. rolleyes.gif

Don't take this the wrong way, but you've come here asking for advice and it's been given. Do it properly. Buy a custom made wheel. Far too many risks assosciated with maching a flywheel down. Especially if you want to halve its weight!

400$ for a what it does isn't an idea at the moment
i should have stated until i do my motor rebuild and have my setup
custom made? as in clutch masters? cause thats not really custom

basically i just want to shave sum off even a 15lbs would be fine
cause i'm not goin to be running this motor very long

i'm goin to be starting my new motor project with a much better build then the crap tastic one in the car now
