When I start my Celi after it has been cold for awhile (as short as 2 hours) it wont idle high enough to stay on! the rpm's just drop till it dies, I either have to give it gas to idle it, or rev it up and the self idle finally kicks on! I know reving a cold engine is terrible for any car! anything would help.

i doubt that it gets cold enough in LA in april to hurt the engine. get a tune up. check plugs, wires, etc.

oh and make sure that there is enough gas in the car.

This is a possibility, you should get a fuel tune up. another possibility is the fuel filter is clogged.

so a tune up? and yes I do know about the clutch... the car will turn on but then the rpm's drop... how much is a fuel injection cleaning? and a tune up? and is a dealer the best place to go for the tuneup?

The exact thing happened to me. In a span of two months, my celi started then just died three times. I was due for my 60,000 so I did the regular maintenance (new plugs, topped fluids, flushed coolant, changed oil & filter . .. ). I told them about it and they couldn't figured it out. They did notice my battery was a four or five year old battery and may be near the end of its life. They say that was it and replaced it , but I don't believe them. The month after all that work done, my car did the same thing. I started it and it died two seconds later. I had to press the gas for twenty seconds, then it was fine.

It hasn't happened since, its been two months. If you find out what's causing this, let me know.

I'm most likely going to the dealer for a tune up within the month. I'll inquire about it then. And this dosnt happen off and on, it happens pretty much every time...

Man i didnt know this topic was here. I just posted a topic ascking the same thing. This just started to happen to my car too. 75000 miles. I replaced the battery, spark plugs, and wires, cleanned the fuel system, all today and it is still happening. Heres the thing, when the engine is cold it starts fine, When it is still really hot it starts fine, but when it cools down for like 2-3 hours its doing the dieing thing. I dont get it. No one knows what the problem is becasue when they go to look at it, it doesnt happen. Including the dealership, dont go there. They r crooks. Im thinking it might be a fuel filter or something in those lines. I hope someone fines this problem and what it is....

tell me about it. the toyota dealership garage mechanic was useless. "well, I can't tell you what causes it " he said. I left the car with him for the day to do that 60,000 maintenance. he said, " well it didn't happen while I had it the whole day, so . . ." he was not very much help.

let me know if anyone finds out anything.

DOes anyone think the problem might be in with the Cooling system somehow? I live in NC and it only started happening when the weather was warming up to the high 70s and 80s. If not that could it be a default in the ECU or something.
