So I've read through the whole process a couple of times, and what I still need to get is an oil filter wrench, a drain pan, and possible something to get the oil drain plug off. I'd need to purchase a new filter too and ive seen anywhere from 4-6 quarts of oil. Could anyone tell me a rough estimate of these costs? |

20$ or less for 4qt of oil and filter depending on what brand you get. 5$ for oil filter wratchet adaptor, 5$ for a nice pan... youll need a 14mm wrench to get the oil pan plug off.

I know it's fun to be able to change your own oil, but why not take it to the shop and have it done for 12 bucks? I know the oil quality isn't as high, but as long as you keep changing it at under 3k miles you're fine

it all depends on the person..
its actually more convient to do the oil change my self.. i can change the oil in my car in about 30 mins.. and it take me atleast 30min to drive to an oil change station. and the oil you get for 12 bucks is really low quality. |

hmm I see, my car shop is about a 5 min drive from my house. Like I said, you're right about the low quality oil...but I usually end up changing mine every 2,5k miles

I use Castrol Synthetic 10-W30, a K&N oil filter, and change it every 2500-3000. I wouldn't do it any other way. 136k on the engine now, and it runs like new.

You dont need an oil filter wrench, just use your hand. It shouldn't be on tight enough to need a wrench, and you shouldn't use the wrench when putting it on.
And yes you definatly need a wrench for the drain plug, 14mm. |

I don't know where you guys go for a $12 oil change, but I know it's at least 20-40 bucks around here, and even if I find a place cheaper, do I really want to know everything about a car except how to change oil? This is a basic thing and anything I can learn about cars is something that makes me feel safer driving one. |

idk- i'd say get a wrench- the ST oil fliter is in kinda hard to reach spot- IMO the wrench makes it easier. -------------------- Buy my Celica $2,500 - http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=76562&st=0

I go to walmart: 5$/5qrts of Supertech oil and 2$ for a supertech filter. BLING!!! Walmart also carries the filter wrenches for like 3$. Oil pan takes a 14mm socket.
