Just got a quote for some maintenance items:

Replace Cap and Rotor
Replace Fuel Filter
Remove and Clean EGR Valve/vacuum hoses
Replace valve cover gasket
Add 1/2 pound freon

$390 your thoughts?

Any other imminent wear items to be replaced?

Recently 15k miles ago:
Replaced plugs
Timing belts
All fluids flushed and replaced (tranny, diff, power steer, and coolant)

The price above includes all parts and labor.

Also, got a quote which I'm putting off for fixing the emergency brake (the thing goes way up) for $220 parts and labor. My mechanic told me that there is a shoe on the Celicas that is separate from operating the calipers on the emergency brake. Is this true? He said fixing the emergency brake is not as simple as replacing or tightening the cable. True?

the price also depends on where you are located, prices in the California will be more then compared to other places in the USA.

most of the stuff on the list i would do myself because it fairly easy to do.. ( cap and rotor, fuel filter)
i would hold on changing the valve cover gasket untill there is a noticeable leak. (if it aint broken dont fix-it?)

The only thing expencive on your list is the freon.

yes there is a sperate pads for the emergency brakes.
and they are expencive to replace also, i had to send mine into get more brake material added on.

for the most part, i would try adjusting the cable before changing the pads.

I don't know how much freon costs, but a month ago I paid $400 for a tune-up (plugs, wires, distributor cap), all new belts (except timing belt) and a new valve cover gasket. That is the total price parts and labor from the dealership.

NEVER go to the DEALERSHIP
thats just stupid

on drum brakes the e-brake and rear shoe is the same
on rear disk brake you can only get the e-brake pad from the dealership

you can get cap, rotor, plugs, wires, vavle cover gasket from advanced auto/ auto zone ect... for hella less and do it yourself cause its REALLY EASY
you can even get freon from advanced as long as its R-134
if your R-12 then you need to go to a mechanic to have that done

it really just depends on how much you know about cars and are willing to do. the cap and rotor are really easy thing to do, even if its your 1st time doing it. cleaning out the egr and doing the valve gasket isint hard either but might be too much to handel if you never worked on a car before. ... so its your call.. at least youll know toyota will do it right.

Exactly why I go to the dealership. Plus it saves me a BUNCH of time.

nope 20$ for a 35-1 battery!

but i worked at advanced auto and yea we have a few loop holes for stuff
aka it was a "used battery" so that already makes it like 25$
and employee discounts
mwahaha everything becomes very cheap!
