I've been doing some research on gutting the cat on the 5s. Seems as though it's a back and forth argument. I'm talking about the one on the exhaust manifold. I gutted mine today, but I decided to get a new gasket from between the manifold and cat (hopefully the dealer has it, because no were else does). Anyone who's wondering if it actually makes any gains or not, I'll be posting again tomorrow to tell you. I just did this out of curiosty and need to do something. I'm willing to lisson to any ideas anyone has that will be cheap and easy for a few hp, but I think I've propably heard all of them, and done all that weren't stupid.

So we'll be relying upon the accuracy of the butt dyno then?

Will that throw a cel?

You'd be surprised what my butt dyno can do. You don't have to believe me. All sciptics against me have crossed over after seeing how much I pay attention to things. I'm one of those guys who never runs the radio, lissons to every little noise, and feels almost everything. Like I said before, you don't have to believe me. I promiss to give as accurate acount as possable.

do you already have an exhaust system? headers?

gutting the cat will only help if you already have those upgraded and want some more flow.

I am upgraded from haff back. I do not have a header. What I did was a modification to the cat that is attached to the exhaust manifold. I am considering a header, but I think it's going to be a waste on this stupid 5s. No power, just a toy.

Results are in. I have little or no gain in horse power. I might have actually gotten a loss in torque though. If there was a loss, then it was very minor. For those who care, I didn't notice the car sounding much louder either. It was a nice learning experiance, but I'm irritated that thats all it was. If I can get a header some time, I might be happy.

I remember reading that the gas expands then has to force back into the funnel.

How did you gut it - cut it and reweld it, or punch it out?

If anyone needs interior stuff, etc, I'm parting whats left of my celi out. Just ask.

I just removed it and punched it out. It's the one on the front of the engine. I don't see any other way of doing it. I just took the one off my last car. It was one set up like the resinator on the celica. I noticed more gains from it. My guess it that the turbulent air flow is the reason there isn't any more of a increase. I might take the hole thing apart again and fit some sort of cylinder in there to keep the air from expanding.
