QUOTE(pr_caralho @ Jun 17, 2005 - 11:27 PM) nah bro the colecovision hahahaha, but seriously theres to many games out there made by too many companies and at least 50 percent of them are either alike or crap, To me the best video game developers are nintendo, cause they can make anything into something real good... systems like xbox, to me its like there trying too hard to beaT sony.... but seriously no game revolutionizes games like mario 1 did cmon... I thought this was about knowing your roots? Do you know where we'd be without the Magnavox Odyssey? Do you remember the phenomenon we know as PONG? What about Splatterhouse for TurboGrafx16. Both revolutionized video games. PONG introduced kids to video games and believe it or not those kids are responsible for the games we play today. Splatterhouse was one of the most controversial violent game to exist and to be honest, without it I think we'd all be playing the 18th sequel to Strawberry Shortcake from the Atari 2600. Yeah I read it I was the third to respond, well the TurboGrafx16 (basically a Genisis, same with the MS) wasn't that bad, nor the Master System, but the Calecovision come on, it had Amazing Bumpman and Skiing as hit games. BTW here is a good candidate for the worst roots system: Panasonic CD-i, inovative but terrible.

The foundation that had been laid by Nintendo's predecessors was rock solid. The decline was due to a lack of new systems and games. You can only do so much with old technology. IMO Nintendo gets so much credit because they invented the backgroud (ok, I know some Atari games had backgrounds, but you usually couldn't tell what they were) Nintendo kind of opened up the gaming market due to the high graphics of it's time, a major step from Atari, kind of like the Playstation from the Genesis. I personally think nothing can really out do a PC as far as power and you can upgrade at will, unlike a console, but also unlike a console it's not hard slapping a few thousand a year doing it, the PC advances faster than the games developed for it. I need an opinion of Dawn of War, I would have bought it but I splurged to much on a flat screen TV.

No, the founation was weak because the atari 2600 was a bust. People were throwing those things away because no one wanted them. You couldn't even pay someone to take it. They rounded up millions of cartridges and blew them up in the desert. I know that sounds dumb, but it's true. The industry was dead until Nintendo and Mario came out. They single-handedly revitalized the industry and made it what it is today. Sega had the Master System, but it only had like 5% market share. I still think the Commodore 64 rules, because it was the first 8-bit computer ever and it came out in the early 80's, long before the NES. |
