How sluggish is the Automatic tranny when compared to the stick???? Any issues with the auto?? I'm a manual tranny guy by heart and won't flinch at changing a clutch, but when it comes to the slushbox, that's uncharted territory. Plus sticks are more fun to drive.

Thanks everyone!

So are you deciding which you want?

If youre doing all city driving and such, I'd say go for the auto, just less hassle.

I considered buying an auto, but don't regret it one bit. I wish more people drove 5/6 speeds...

I've driven an automatic GT and it's not that sluggish. The tranny actually felt pretty sporty for an auto.

That said, I would definitely go with a manual. I've driven manual STs and GTs, and they both are far better than the auto versions. I've never liked the way the S-54(GT tranny) feels at all, but I've only driven a '94 Celica GT and a '00 Camry with them...maybe it was just those two cars.

Hmmm......so it's not THAT bad. My only thing about it is that I love driving a stick. It's just more fun. I do a lot of driving, about 25000 miles a year, and my daily commute is 50 miles in the morning and 35 in the evening (different way home). The morning is all highway, with some stop and go at a VERY congested section. The evening is all back roads with a lot of slower traffic, but averages about 45 MPH. I have no problem driving a stick through that (of the cars that I normally drive right now ALL are sticks) and originally entertained the thought of an auto.

I'm with everyone else... you should control your car and its so awesome to drive! Once you get use to it, traffic and city driving is no problem

Well, the right opportunity may have popped up. I found a local 96 GT with 44K miles for $5500. It's an auto, but if it's in good shape that deal can't be beat.

Well, I may end up in an auto after all. I found what could turn out to be a screaming deal on a 96 GT with 44K miles for $5500, listed aparrently 2 days ago but didn't pop up until today.

Has anyone ever done an auto to stick swap?? How much of an ordeal is that to do?? Actually, come to think of it, would a 7Gen six speed drop into and mate up with a 5S-FE????? That would REALLY help out that highway gearing.

Buy what you want... don't settle for an auto. Doing a manual conversion can be really costly... so make sure you're satisfied the first time around.

As for the manual conversion... the 2ZZ 6 speed won't work with the 5SFE... although I hear the gearset more or less drops into a C5x box (Celica ST trans)...

GRRRRR.......I HATE not having a ton of options to choose from. My last two purchases (00 Lincoln LS and 93 highly modded Trans Am) both were perfect for what I wanted and just dropped out of the sky into my lap. There's just nothing up here in the east coast right now.

I hate waiting.....lol.
