JDM 112MPH speed limiter??, Is This True? Options

I just read that theres a 180KMH (112)MPH speed limiter on J-Spec engines? Can anybody confirm or deny this?

yeah, many jdm cars are limitted from what i have heard. it can be defeated however i am not exactly sure as to how.

From what I've heard there is a 'gentlemens agreement' among japanese car manufacturers (and maybe the government) that they will not produce cars that can exceed 180km/h or are more powerful than around 204Kw.

This is why most japanese car speedos only go to 180Km/h, and the JDM versions of cars are rated at lower HP than say USDM or NZDM cars.

Interestingly the HP rating of powerful JDM cars (like the supra) never seem to exceed the 204ish Kw limit (360HP equiv ?) - even though dyno tests and aftermarket speedos paint a different picture (think skyline gtr)

Happily it seems this agreement may be broken in the near future (2005?) with many rumours of a number of manufacturers quietly working on new supercars (like the new supra, the return of the RX7, a revised NSX, the new skyline and a quicker 350Z). So far no one is saying anything - but that is to be expected when you're competing to make the fastest, most powerful or 'first to the market' supercar.

If JDM engines were imported to us and we swapped theirs into ours does that mean we can't go pass 112mph? doesn't sound right because...

As far as i kno, Japanese Law states that the cars must be limited to 180KM/H and thats 112mph. YES THEY ARE LIMITED. To by pass this i've seen an Apexi De-Limiter, however im not sure how it works at doing so. Also, u can cut that speedo cable to the ECU, where the ECU thinks your standing still. This will eliminate the govenor but ur ecu will also think ur standing still, and fuel, fan and cooling maybe compomised. Its not like im going to go 112 all the time, but if im racing on the highway, im going to top out real quick, i dont like limits.

I don't know about Toyota's, but I have a number of friends with JDM Honda engines and they have no problem breaking 180km. Also the JDM Versions are rated with a higher horse power.

Yeah its true Jap Cars are fitted with limiters and 112mph is the speed it trips at, you can have the car delimited in
different ways. Mine was done automatically out of the
compulsory speedo conversion to read mph. Stickers
on the dial face won't do as it still means your odometer
will read wrong. A chip is placed in line to divide the KMH
electrical pulses to a mph calibration (division by approx
1.5). This means the limiter wont cut in until approx
1.5 times the previous limiter speed (112mph x 1.5 =168mph)
though your engine would probably die from shock if it
went by 120

I have a 1994 GT (3S-GE) "2000TwinCam"
It was imported here to Ireland from Japan, it uses KMPH readings on the speedo.
It was limited to 180KMph, the speedo only went up this far and the car would lose power once this speed was reached (Damn limiter!)

I purchaced a cable converter which converts the speedo to MPH.
This was just a small box which was spliced into the speedo cable.

Now when the speedo shows for example 60KMph the car is actually travelling at 60MPH.
No need to replace the dials or anything like that,
I just put a MPH sticker over the KMph one and everything works perfectly.

It also got rid of that 180KMph (112MPH) limit
I have had the car to 140MPh so far and all I did was put on this cable converter.

I was looking into getting a GReddy speed cut controller which eliminates this but i gotta get a converter ne how so im just going to kill 2 birds with one stone and get the converter - where did u get urs?
