Hi, my name's Andy and I'm a new member. I dont actually own a 6th Gen but was wondering if you guys could answer a question I have? I drive a 4th Gen Celica running a ST202 3S-GE and lots of other 6th gen bits... it wishes it was a 6th gen!
My question is about the JDM ST202's - I'm looking at upgrading my g.box but need some info on them. The 3S-GE half cuts I've seen come in two varieties. One has the regular 5sp g.box, normal suspension and normal single piston brakes. The other type of cut has a bigger g.box (with a black cap on the end), superstrut suspension and twin piston brakes with bigger rotors. Does anyone know what the difference is between the g.boxes? I can get one with driveshafts pretty cheap but I dont know if it'll be worth the bother. Any help would be appreciated! Andy |

I believe the 2nd one is the SS-III halfcut, with the red top BEAMS engine? I think the two 3S-GE gearboxes are basically the same except that the 197 PS SS-III Beams engine is geared differently (a bit longer), but don't quote me on that. if I managed to come across an SS-III half cut, I'd take more than just the gearbox

Thanks for the reply! Both cuts were definitely 3SGE Gen III's (model prev to the beams). I'm only after the g.box as the one in the car has a worn diff (its from a ST204).
Next time I'm down there I'll take note of the year it was made and the model code of the g.box. I've been told the bigger g.box has double synchros, bigger driveshafts and possibly LSD? This post has been edited by Andy: Jul 14, 2005 - 12:53 AM |

If they were both GenIII 3S-GEs, I'm not sure, but the later model SS-IIIs did get LSD so its quite possible that the 2nd cut has LSD.

Cool cool. What was the difference between the SS-II and SS-III? Did the SS-III come with the Gen III? I thought that they only came with the BEAMS motor... man I wish i could speak japapenese!

Well I own a JDM SSII and I know a bit to be able to answer your question.
The SSII had two versions one with superstrut and one with normal suspension (like mine). The SSIII were all superstruts. All superstrut cars have different gearbox which include an LSD. Do not excpect too much from the LSD as it is there to try and eliminate torque steer and is 10kg heavier. Other than that the BEAMs engine has nothing to do with the different gearboxes. |

Thanks for that, much appreciated! LSD would be nice, but at an extra 10kg... hmm...
So all superstrut cars definitely had an LSD? Will the LSD in these g.boxes help reduce wheelspin at all? Are there any other benefits in swapping to this g.box? I found one on Yahoo Japan - linkage Thanks for all your help so far! |
