Hello everyone, my name is dj. Im from Johnson City Tennessee, 17. I bought a 94 Gt about a month ago. 5 speed, blue, white racing stripe, intake, cd player, bassiclly stock. Well the car only had 107k when i picked it up, now having about 111k. The motor had just been rebuilt about a thosand miles before i got it. Well apparentlly in the rebuild process, which im guessing was done by toyota (because of remanufactuerd plauqe) they had a rev limiter installed to make sure break-in was comepleted, or to prolong life of the motor. Regardless now its broke in and i want it off. It sucks having to shift at 4k rpms, yup thats right, it cuts out at about 4,200 rpms. I dont think it is fuel related b/c the motor doesnt cut out at all, it bounces slowlly out of gear, in gear it sounds wierd, like it just bogs down, sometimes backfires. I dont know how to take it off because i dont know where its at or what it would involve. And no I cant just reset my ecu, ive tried. If anybody could give me some answers on that, that would be really cool. Also, there is a loud whineing noise when goin down tha road. Almost like I have huge nobby tires. The axle will pop sometimes when i turn but then go away for a while, idk if it has anything to do with that or not. I was lookin at the axle and there was a big washer lookin thing sliding around back and forth on my axle, i also saw alot of grease around the axle. Is that axle grease, and would that explain why it pops sometimes? If so, how would I fix that? Could i just put more grease in the axle?? I really appreciate any help u guys can give me. Thanks alot

DJ

um yeah... rev limiter no clue..

otherwise it sounds as if your cv joint is gone. when mine went I just replaced the whole axle on the passengers side it was like $70 after core return. The only other thing I can think of could be your wheel bearing which are a real pain in the booty to change yourself cause they're pressed in. Anywho welcome and good luck.

Definitely sounds like a rev limiter and a bad axle.

For the rev limiter I'd take it to someone to have it removed, or maybe someone on here will post something useful

The axle should definitely be replaced, and depending on its condition / whether they were ever replaced it might not be a horrible idea to go ahead and replace both for preventative maintenence.

Well i'd like to get it taken off, ive been to a couple of places and they dont know where tha hell to start. Im not sure where the rev limiter would be or what it would be ran through. Ive heard it could be built in the distribitor. Does anybody know where it would be or how i could have it taken off? Oh and the axle actually looks pretty new. Im not sure if it is or not but it just looks new compared to everything else, and you can see the serial number sticker and everything. Maybe it was'nt put back in right? IDK, just a thoguht.

I'd suggest you take it to a Toyota dealer. Preferably the one that did the rebuild. A 4200 rpm rev limiter is not normal.

"Also, there is a loud whineing noise when goin down tha road. Almost like I have huge nobby tires"

Is it a whining noise or more of a rolling thud? Nobby tires wouldn't make a whining noise.

If the axle pops when you turn, you more than likely have a bad cv joint. Check the boots around the cv's to see if they are torn. That would probably be where the axle grease is coming from. If it's torn, you need to replace it.

hope that helps

sounds like the car needs a tune up or there was something wrong during this "rebuid". see if u can figure out who serviced the car and what was changed. ive never seen anyone install any type of rev limiter to help break in a car... if they did that, the the cars would come that way from the factory when u buy it new.

Theres no way of finding out what was done, nobody really knows. It came from out of state used car dealership as a trade in, to here and the ppl i got it off of no nothing of the history about it. And on tha what was changed, nothin really, just installed a rev limiter. Also, if you think about it it would be smart to have one installed. Prolong life, maybe get a better warrenty, so your son doesnt blow up a motor u just paid to be rebuilt. There are reasons ppl would want it on there but not nessesarilly should be on the cars from the factory. And on the axle subject, the whineing noise is when im going good speed. When i get slower it sounds like a rolling thud. Oh, and when i turn the steering wheel to the left it gets louder???? And the boots are all in tact and fine... no rips. Some grease is visiblly present though.

if your cv boots are fine then I hate to say that it's probably your wheel bearing. I had to change mine on my 90 celi it wasn't too bad but i had access to a bearing press which helped out immensely. I have no idea how much it would cost for a shop to replace one considering you have to take the whole wheel hub off to replace it. Good luck.

I'm thinking safe mode on the ECU part. Anything unusual, like holes in the intake, or unmetered air going into the intake?
