Whenever I drive past 40-45mhp I hear this humming sound from either my rear or front driver side wheel. I am pretty sure its the wheel bearing. I was wondering if our cars need to have the bearing pressed on with a special machine, because my friend said some cars do and some don't. Does anyone know if the bearing needs to pressed on?

Same thing happened with me...ts not pressed on, its screwed on..i fixed mine in my autos shop...my autos teacher had a special socket tool that fit right over the bearing..then with the air gun we tightened and turned it liek a full 360 degrees using pure torque... but my problem was like at about 75mph my front end began to chake a little..then after 85 it was fine...after i tightened the wheele bearing it was perfect

you really don't tighten bearings and they dont' screw on they are pushed in its just not "pressed" per say........and if you understood bearings its not a tightening thing its once they lose grease/lose a ball or whatever they are permanently screwed nearly (you can regrease them, some kinds) you just have to go replace them especially if you have over sized wheels (17s or higher) the bearings can suffer and cause much more damage aka a hub and such

How can I figure out if my front or back wheel bearings need to be replaced??? i think its the front my but my friend (the car dude) thinks its the back ones because of "the humming" noise....

back in january i ran over something on the way up to seattle that was so hard/sharp it cracked my front right rim!!!!!!! then back in march my friend was putting my spare tire on my front left side for me on his slanted drive way & the jack came out from under the car which caused my poor baby to hit the driveway on the front left corner w/ no wheel to hold it up frown.gif....i think thats around the time the humming started!

so thats why I think its the front wheels that need new wheel bearings...! the back wheels havent suffered any retarded accidents....

what do u guys think?? front or back? lol

im going to buy the bearings today so i gotta figure it out...hmmmm

The bearings are pressed on. I got rear bearing, made by SKF (they make the OEM ones) and they came with the hub. The front bearings don't come with the hub and you'll need a press to press out the old and press in the new.
