i want to turbo my 7A-FE can anyone tell me how and what parts are needed. i went to jgstools.com and they had alot of parts listed
but i want the cheapest, best value i can find, so what type of parts would be in this "turbo". i also found sum cheap intercoolers, turbos, and a Bosch bypass valve on ebay(is that a good idea?). oh and do i need a new "turbo back" exhaust system. i relize i will need a new fuel pump too. also for the intercooler piping $299 seems alot for me can't i just got to the hardware store and buy quater inch steel tubing and bend it myself with a pipe bender? -------------------- |

ok um...as far as a turbo goes on the ST..i really wouldn't wnana do things cheap...in order to have thing go smoothly, you're gonna need an interior redone w/ things such as new 4agze pistons, rods, and what not, and maybe even a rebuild, but that'd be included w/ the new pistons and rings and all..uh... the entire fuel system is gonna need uprgrading, um...yes the exhaust should be re-done from the turbo back w/ about 2.5" to 3" piping for the most gain. also, the jgstools setup is about the cheapest you can find w/o gettin hookups from peeps, and if i were gonna do this, that's the route i would go...also, intercooler piping you COULD make, but, the kit is mandrel bent, and you really wouldn't wanna bend IC piping w/ a pipe bender and get crush-bent curves...
um...also, you would need an ignition upgrade, and all sorts of other little stuff... sure i named a lot, but if you wanna do it RIGHT...you need all this to keep the engine runnin strong. you can hook up w/ 94 st turbo or w/e from celica.net...his celica has done nothin but break down and makin noises since he turbo'd the 7afe. but don't let that discourage you...it CAN be done, you just need to be very thorough in order to make sure that everything goes smoothly. hope that helps. -John- -------------------- |

If your going to do work like that on your car NEVER think CHEAP, always think about doing it right. Get all the things that you need to do the job done right the first time. It will cost you more if you have to do things more then once. If you trully want to tourbo your 7A then do it but make sure you have the money and the time to do it right. "remeber you always get what you paid for"

96TurboST has been practically waiting for his car to break down so he can buy a Supra. If he wasn't running 10 psi he wouldn't have those problems. The 7AFE is suited only for MILD boost applications, you can run 7 or 8 psi reliably without upgraded internals. You are right about the ignition/fuel system though, and you will also need a S-AFC to control the fuel/air ratio. The setup should cost you 3.5k or so, but thats good for about 180-200 hp at the crank. |

it's just MO tho that 7psi on a 80hp engine just is not even worth it...if you're gonna go...go all out...if you wanna build a turbo 7afe engine...build it...don't just pussy-foot around and PRETEND to do it. i dont' have any experience, but i'd suspect 7psi on a 7afe to be just enough to make a nose and you feel a little umph...and you may lag behind a GSR a little closer...like i said, i dunno, just assumptions..

7 or 8 psi is around 180-200 hp. I don't consider that "pussy-footing" around, but I guess you have higher standards than me. I'm not trying to build a drag car, I just want some extra hp/tq to make the back roads a bit more fun. Trust me, the last thing I want is a butt-load of HP, one of my good friends just broke both his legs after crashing his WRX into a cement wall. |

Hey g dog i agree with 180-200 hp out of a 7A is not pussy-footing it, I think that if you can get that from a turbo done the right way is great. and is your friend OK. I know having one broken leg is realy F'd up. I don't think i can handle two send him my best. -------------------- |

yeah true. it's just, i'm really not a strong believer in building a turbo Econo-engine...just doesn't seem right...that same 180-200hp out of a 4age or somethin like that would be a lot more potent. higher revs, more quality power.
-John- edit: and about the standards and all, nah, not that high, if i had high standards i woulda just called the person dumb in my first reply, and said the ONLY way to go would be the 3sgte...but i dont believe that, i realize the 7afe can be a good turbo motor, it just takes A LOT. not just a turbo kit and intercooler and little fuel system. i myself plan on the 4agze route, just cause i, like you, aren't into the all out drag car, i just want more pep in the twisties, and that LSD tranny..also, somethin like the 3sgte would be way too much power for a FF platform IMO, but that's a whole nother story. -------------------- |

mac: yeah my friend is alright. he was lucky he only broke both his legs, says a lot for the WRX's safety I think. thnx for the concern.
john: looks like we finally agree on something. I was mostly playing devils advocate with the 7AFTE option though; while I think it IS viable, I have to agree that an engine swap is probably a better choice. |
