Hey all. I'm a new member, just signed up, and im purchasing a 94 celica tomorrow. the guy says it has another engine swapped into it, and that it was a 2.0L swapped in. i checked the engine, and the block(or head, i can't remember, i have a really bad memory) said it was a 3s with some other stuff, but i can't remember what else it said. so it really is a 2.0 it seems, though i can't remember if its a 3sge, or 3sfe. whats strange is that when the new engine got swapped in, they kept the 5sfe intake. can you guys tell from the head which 3s it could be? also, whats the hp ratings on either models?

hehe you guys are fast. so was the sticker on the block... uhhh.. fake then? the sticker said '3s' and '20L'. it probably also said if it was a fe or ge, but i didnt pay attention. the head looks like the 5s head like you guys are saying, and it has the 5s intake, but would they work on a 2.0 block?

you should post a pic of where "3s" or "2.0" is on the engine.

ill take a picture of it tomorrow when i see it again. the sticker was under/around the timing belt cover, but the timing belt cover itself didnt have any markings on it. did any of the engines come with a red top like in the picture? i looked at some pictures for some 5s-fe's and they are pretty much all silver/unpainted. i dunno if the guy just painted it or what to make it look neato.

That just looks like a plain 5S-FE with a powdercoated/painted valve cover.

Well thats a 3s ecu, but thats not a 3s engine. Take a picture of the sticker thats on the drivers side firewall.

I dont think ud need a 3s ecu even if u were using a 3s bottom end, this is perplexing.

the only thing i can think of is that it could be a 3sge block with a 5s head. But it doesn't make any sense to put a 5s head on there.

He could be just selling you the car with a 5sfe motor and upgraded to a 3s ECU. Which again, doesn't make any sense because you can upgrade the 5s ECU.

This all seems a lil ODD.

well, the gauges are for a turbo or non-turbo motor. They're just monitoring the A/F ratio.

Is that ECU even installed in the car? Without knowing more, I would bet its not and the car has a 5sfe with a AFC and A/F guage installed.

My advice is be careful....

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.

the first picture is of the identification sticker on the block, so i assume the block is 3s. the head has no identification that i could find. the plate on the firewall says st204blah blah. ill go take some more pictures of the head though to see if theres any idents that i couldnt find. im guessing its a 3s bottom end with an fe head? if thats even how the coding works that is. the ecu is a spare ecu that was in the glove compartment, so its not the ecu that the car is currently running, though maybe ill check to see what ecu its running. where is the ecu located on the st204s?

Behind the dash on the floor. You access it from under the glove compartment. I bet its a 3s block with a 5s head. Perhaps he bent a valve or something and replaced the head with the 5s head. Seems like a lot of work to just put a 5s head on there though.

i took some more pictures, but i dont think it says anything about the head. the block really is a 3s blcok because i found the casting code on it. the head... well... theres a japanese sticker on it stating how many km is on it i believe is there a visual difference between the 3s and 5s heads? on another board where i showed the first picture, someone said "Its a JDM 3S-FE 2.0L swap. They keep the 5S intake manifold and other electronics so everything just bolt-on. All S series share exhaust manifold. FE heads share intake manifold also. GE got its own intake and head". the ge cam gear cover is supposed to be wider than that of the fe because of the ge has 2 cam gears, as opposed to the fe, which only has 1. i tried taking some pictures of the timing belt cover, but it was pretty hard to see how wide it was in the pictures. should i just go out a measure it with a tape measurer?

sounds plausible...if it were me, I would look elsewhere. 3sfe's are not exactly sought after engines for swaps. Good luck.
