Check engine light came on. Ok so my car tells me it needs a new EGR valve. Anybody have good pics of it? toyota said 158 for a new one. Can i replace it myself? Does it just need to be cleaned? My car has 137k on it, lotsa buildup. My car still runs smooth. How imparitive is it that i get it replaced? I have emissions this month.

So your check engine light came and and you had someone check it?

The EGR valve is the circular disc that sits to the left of the throttle body attached to the back of the intake manifold. The pipe that connects underneath it runs like an L shape to the back of the motor.

If you want to replace it you have to take out most of your intake and disconnect the pipe farther down (its a big nut in the 20 millimeter range). You will need to order the EGR valve, Gasket and the pipe that connects to the egr.

You can disconnect the pipe right at the egr but it is easier if you do it farther down. *You dont have to buy the pipe if you dont want but it will save you alot of hassle* I broke a piece off mine trying to take of the pipe in a vice.

Hope this helps sorry for no pics.

You should probably disconnect the battery for a while after to reset memory

try pulling the valve and cleaning it. It can develop carbon buildup especially if you drive your car over very short distances so it does not get up to op temp. We had an experimental EGR cooler on our ethanol car in 98 in university. Scrape it off and give it a shot but it could still be the electical bits.

my advice would to either buy or check out a chiltons repair manual from a library, that way you get step by step instructions and pictures. i just returned mine or else id put the egr cleaning instructions down.

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.

Ok i found it in my chiltons manual. I found a vaccum line broken and replaced it and reset it. no check engine light for now. I hope that was it. Guess everybody should do that before thinking about replacing the valve is check your lines. Also check the filter in the egr modulator. thanks for the help.

I think there is only two rubber/silicone lines running to the egr.
One on the top and one on the side going to the modulator.
Just unplug the negative for a couple of minutes

Weird... I had the same problem. I got it replaced by my mechanic, he charged me 180 total. The check engine light went away, but I really don't notice any difference.
