tensioner, adjustment procedure Options

hey guys,

so, my 99 gt lb (auto) is squealing on startup (never lasts for more than 2 or 3 seconds) and also whenever i turn on the a/c (this squeals for a good 45 seconds to a minute...until it gets going) and i'm wondering what the proper procedure is for adjusting the tensioner. in the honda world, most people go by the HELM workshop manual rather than chiltons or haynes and, though i can't say that my search has been exhaustive, i'm not finding a comparable manual for our celicas.

if someone could inform me as to the preferred shop manual amongst toy owners, or else just fill me in on the procedure, that'd be awesome.

the tnesioner is on the alternator bracket it's easy as heck. if that doesn't work your gonna need a new belt.

rjb has it covered, the alternator bracket has the adjusting bolt right on it, loosen the back 14mm bolt on the alternator a turn, then if you have a/c there is a 12mm bolt that holds the adjusting bolt in place, then just tighten the 12mm adjusting bolt a few turns, and start the car, if it still squeeks, and the belt looks "wobbley" tighten a bit more. if it STILL dont stop, prolly time for a new belt, theyre pretty cheap, at any autoparts store.

as far as a shop manual, by FAR the best manual for our car is the Toyota factory service manual, better known around here as the "BGB" or big green book. they are expensive tho.
i happen to come across a sweet deal on ebay a few weeks ago on a set for my 94, ended up paying under 50$ shipped for both books, they run about 80$ ea at the toyota dealer.
IMO its also good to have the cheapo haynes or chiltons around sometimes tho, there are alot of instances in the BGB that call for SST's (special service tools) that the haynes or chiltons can show you how to get done without the SST's.

thanks, everybody--info was very useful. and thank you lagos, that's what i was looking for. the HELM manual is, i suppose, the equivalent to your BGB--what the service techs use at dealerships/authorized repair facilities, expensive as heck at $80, but can be had for free if you know where to look and have acrobat reader
