Im working on my car right now, and I got the 5sfe. I believe my timing belt broke because my rotor under the distrubutor cap does not spin when the motor is cranked. Is there a plug in the timing belt cover i can take off to see the belt? How do i get to it, remove the passenger wheel? What else do you recommend i change> water pump? anything else. Im still stranded since thursday!!! Thanks guys.

im screwed!!! its the timing belt, and i just spent 192 on a coil some plugs and wires. Not only that, but they sent me coils for the 7 not the 5. I looked under the timing belt cover, and pulled the broken belt out a little. The relief, is at least now i know what it is.

To my knowledge Toyota engines are non interference engines, and does not take damage from "running" with a broken timing belt.. I don't want to bet on it though. I just remember to have heard that somewhere..

Also, our old Camry broke down when the timing belt snapped.. Nothing else got damaged..

Change the timing belt, water pump, pulley and tensioner to avoid any problems in that area down the line... The motor is NON-interference and no damage will be done by a broken timing belt or trying to start the car with the broke belt. smile.gif
