Tukwila police have released a composite drawing of a potential suspect in the fatal double shooting at Southcenter Mall Monday afternoon. The police also say the man may have driven a 1990 to 1993 Toyota Celica.

At 4:35 p.m. Monday, a woman heard gunshots in the mall's north parking lot. She turned and saw a man standing next to the victims' vehicle, Baskin said. She called 911 and reported that two people were slumped over inside the car.

Police found a 17-year-old boy dead in the passenger seat and the driver, a 30-year-old Tukwila man, critically wounded. The man died early yesterday at Harborview Medical Center, Baskin said.

The 17-year-old was identified yesterday by the King County Medical Examiner's Office as Ivan Payan Rojas. Payan Rojas died from gunshot wounds to the head. Investigators have tentatively identified the man, who died from a single gunshot wound to the head but it has not been confirmed.

Video footage from a security camera captured a man leaving the parking lot after the shooting. He was described as white, in his 40s, 5-feet-10 to 6 feet tall, 180 to 200 pounds, with brown hair and a brown, bushy mustache, Baskin said. His vehicle was described as a tan or bronze, late-model, two-door sportslike car with a hood scoop and spoiler, which Tukwila police believe was a Toyota.
"We have some ideas" about what may have motivated the shooting, Baskin said, but he declined to elaborate.

"I think these people had some encounter in the parking lot," he said, adding that no witnesses reported hearing or seeing a fight between the victims and suspect before the shooting. The deaths are Tukwila's first slayings of the year, Baskin said.

Police haven't been able to determine what relationship, if any, the victims may have had to each other.

Heather Almond, general manager of Westfield Shoppingtown Southcenter, said the mall has a good working relationship with Tukwila police and other local agencies, and strives to provide a safe environment.

Security officers work around the clock and provide escorts to the parking lot for any shopper who requests it, and security guards and security cameras are used inside and outside the mall, she said.

"We're always re-evaluating security," Almond said, though she declined to provide details. "This is a safe center and measures are in place to make sure this continues to be a safe environment."

Tukwila police officers have been called to the mall to investigate problems such as shoplifting, credit-card forgeries and stolen cars, "but as far as crimes against persons, it's pretty rare," Baskin said.
