Actually, the replacement cartridges use the oil to improve heat transfer and rust prevention. With the amount of force being put on those cartridges, oil wouldn't prevent it from moving around if it's incorrectly installed.

yea i put motor oil in it. but that doesnt help either way i dont have the bolt or nut to tighten up the strut csrtridge to the struts. man i drove my car to work today and when i hit a lil bump my car becomes like a low rider bounces up and down. im getting the parts tomorow and ima put it on thurs. i have to fix this before it damage my car.

The way you've written this sentence, it seems you didn't put the gland nut back on the strut. I'm sure you couldn't have possibly made that big an error, so could you explain what you mean?

today i got new struts put in today. no more stupid scratching noise. turns out the kybs i bought from jdmwers was right after. the only thing was he sent me only one circular nut to tighten the strut cartridge to the shocks and he sent me to Right rear. atleast now i got extra strut cartridges and a Right rear shock. So when i need to replace them again all i need is the left rear and another circle piece thing so i guess in the long run everything went alright. thanks everyone for their help. peace

Crap! I didn't add oil, I just changed my strut cartridges yesterday...

I am noticing a rubbing noise when I steer though, is that because I did not lubricate them? I didn't realize I had to add oil to the strut housing... am I going to have to pull them off and do it now? How bad is it to leave it as is?

You want to use an extremely light oil -- KYB instructions say you should re-use the old strut oil, which is lighter than most motor oils.

However, I've got an e-mail from a KYB tech (Troy Horn to be specific) who wrote there's no need to add oil when using their cartridges -- I'd asked before I bought and received their instructions. Frankly, I didn't do the oil either, relying on the tech's information, and haven't noticed any problems. The part of the cartridge that turns is the piston rod, which wouldn't be affected by oil in the strut.

from what i gather, the oil is just there to help heat transfer. Wouldn't matter if you did not put oil in it.

If you plan to put the car under stress -- racing, autocrossing, road trips -- it's a good idea. Better heat transfer = better longevity.

so your supposed to add oil around the new front cartrage inserts? can i ask what the reson for this is?

The original ones had some type of liquid (liquid unkown X) in them that helped when the cart rubbed against the inner strut. Since we are replacing the cart, we need to add this X liquid in it and to save time and money we just dump a little bit of motor oil in it to help with friction.
