one is a well documented swap, the other is not. so do your research and make a choice.

In this forum, everybody will tell u to go for 3S-GTE, coz it is more powerful and potential. On the other hand, if u ar looking for the Hi-Rev feeling from ur engine, BEAMS should be ur first choice which bases on ur car.
But to be frank, a month ago, I have gone back to hometown-Hong Kong, and also tested out the SS-III there, the first feeling for me of this engine was over-expectation!
Yup, the official data said that engine was 200hp, but after I drove it, I just felt the power and acceleration as same as the Honda Si.
Moreover, after my buddy showed me the dyno sheet of his car, it's only 173.5hp( not on-wheel hp).
So let's think about it again which way u wanna drive for..... biggrin.gif

You should also consider both the 2nd gen and 3rd gen 3S-GE's. They're cheaper, more commonly found, and have the same power potential as the BEAMS.

cyb593, I suggest you do what lagos said and do your research. It's the only way you'll determine what engine is best for you.

Also consider that stock for stock, the 3SGE will require lots of revs to make any power and feel quick....whereas the 3SGTE is a beast and provides a wide range of useful power across the powerband and its easy to make even faster with the aid of a boost controller and simple bolt-on and wire-up modifications. More people in the Celica commmunity have performed this swap and has yielded very satisfying results among all of them.

However the 3SGE motor is far more rare to be seen swapped in, which can be an individualistic appeal thing. Also with some bolt ons, as well as with a little squeeze of Nitrous, the motor could also be downright fast. But it will be far more difficult in every way....from getting the motor, to finding replacement and aftermarket parts, to making more power. However its really an individial choice as to which is the better swap.

On that note, I happen to know somebody with a 97 ST who made the right decision and is a very happy person now. wink.gif

I think you should go for the 3SGTE Swap...Aftermarket parts and performance its the main reason.
For the Beams Engine its hard to find Performance Parts, most of the times you have to go for custom parts or to find a garage in Japan and make for you One-OFF and pre-order them.
If you go for the 3SGTE you can find easily many performance parts, and if you decide for more power just raise the turbo boost (of course with the correct setup).

Besides Toyota decide to keep the 3SGTE Engine by using it on the Caldina GT-Four so parts will continue coming for that engine,Beams was a short time version.

Cyb, as folks told you already, it's only depending on you.

If you prefer 200HP and it's enough for you, then it's wise to go for BEAMS, otherwise you can't be wrong with 3SGTE. And the kick from turbo you will never get from the non-turbo engine. Also very very useful to have a turbo car by overtaking.

It's on you mate ! ;-)

i would go for the 3S-GE but thats just cause i like that engine... if you had a GT i would tell you to do a full front clip swap .. with in theroy should be pull out and drop in compared to the 3S-GTE swap .. performance wise both engines are good .. but its up to the driver to see wich one is better for you ...

if i had the money and knowledge, i'll go for the 3s-ge since i just love the beams logo on there. plus, you'll be indivisualized more then others for having such a rare engine.
but again, yes there isn't much aftermarket parts for the GE.
So in the final conclusion, i'll probably go for the GTE.
but that's just me thou...

One thing I suggest you to do is to go for a preference as well. I like taking the corners at high speed so for better control of the car I go for high revs which can control the car better. If your looking for that push back feel or looking at drags then go for the turbo engine which can be easily modified for more HP. If your just gonna get a daily driver car and have some fun now and then. An N/A engine will best be suited for you such as the beams. Just Remember tho, that I don't really think theres gonna be parts for the engine at NAPA, or wherever you shop for car parts. VVTI beams is next to impossible to find parts for.

3S-GE is still knocking about as well. Seen recently in the last shape Altezza.

The race celica I work on has a 3sge mainly due to the fact that we can't run turbos. Plenty powerful engine and a very easy swap. Also pretty easy to locate in the US for cheap. I would tend to think with some head work you could really have a nice little power plant that isn't over the top and has far less electrical demons to exercise.
