The 3sgte I got obviously never ran on super high octane - there was carbon everywhere in it.

I thought the octane scale they used in Japan was different then ours.

It is...when you see that they have 101 octane over there, that's a research octane number... Here we have the R+M/2 method for octane... motor octane is always lower and tends to vary about 10 points from research octane (so 101 RON = 91 MON = 96 R+M/2)

Not always accurate but it's just a general rule of thumb.. 93 Octane in the states is perfectly fine for a JDM engine... Keep in mind they do have lower octane fuel over there as well. That 101 RON stuff is expensive and a lot of people don't use it. The 3sgte I got obviously never ran on super high octane - there was carbon everywhere in it.

I'm sold !

would anyone else agree with the previous statement that 93 octane in an economy engine is bad for it?

I heard 93 octane is too rich for economy engines, and that using it excessively could actually be detrimental

because I use 93 all the time in the 5s (even though its 20 cents more) and now mage has got me scared that I'm killing my economy engine.

there's really no point to using it. it's just that people are under the impression that because high performance cars used high octane, that it was the gas that was contributing to that performance (partially). That's true and it's not... those engines require the gas to be under more compression without pre-detonation (ping, knock), so require a higher octane rating. your engine doesn't. you could get the same effect of higher octane by running water injection - that's all the water really is in a system like that - an octane booster.

i don't think it would be detrimental to your engine over time, but it's not adding anything for you and you could even be losing a little HP because the 93 is taking slightly more time to burn in your lower compression environment (negligible, however).

Haha, I'm backing you up on that one dude.

I think the highest octane I've seen is the 95 in Sunoco stations. But that stuff can get pricey, as much as 5 cents higher than the premium gas.
