I had a stud in the Exhaust manifold break at the head. In repairing it, my car is now pushing 12 pounds. I still have the stock ecu, no boost controller (until tomorrow), no FCD (stock max is 9.7). Now to give you a few more specifics: A friend of mine put a plastic t in my lines to trick the wastegate into allowing more boost. This caused me to reach 10 (probably 9.7, but meter isn't that detailed). In doing the repair I took the t out. I also found that my Cat was bad and took it out as well (it will cost me $300 to fix later). Replaced a crush gaskit after the stock down pipe to the 3" exhaust. Got everything together at approx 0130, and took it for a test drive. Found a couple of vacuum lines had worked themselves off of the stock BOV. Fixed those, and off again. Ran at stock 7 pounds of boost. Placed the t back in, ran at 10. Next day...got in the car got on it to pass a car...14! Took the t out, down to 12! It does seem to creep. When I hit the gas, it will jump to about 8-10, then steadily walk up to 12 as the rpm's increase. Did my wastegate go bad? I was thinking the increased flow in the exhaust from having no cat may have been the problem but it ran stock the night I did everything. Any ideas?

what motor are you talking about? it looks like you have a 3rd gen 3sgte. thats stock boost for that motor.
who did your swap? This post has been edited by lagos: Dec 4, 2005 - 11:39 PM -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

Sorry...missed that important piece of info. Yes, it is a 3sgte 3rd gen. A couple of friends and I did it in my garage. I thought the max stock boost for the 3rd gen was 9.7?! Even if that was the case I was running at 7 and 10 max when I completed the repairs. Then the next morning I was running at 14 and 12. I don't understand why when nothing changed between that night and the morning. |

the car has a system for controlling boost. if you have an CEL codes, or low grade gas, or some other issue going on, the car will limit the amount of boost it makes. so thats probably why you were getting less boost.
stock boost for a 3rd gen 3sgte is between 12-16psi. so anything you get between there is considered normal. if you get less then that, then your car is going into low boost mode because of some issue the ecu found. make sure you run the highest octain gas you can buy too. what did you do about the wiring harness. did you have to have anything rewired or did it all just plug and play ? i always wondered if there was any wiring that needed to be done with a 3rd gen motor This post has been edited by lagos: Dec 5, 2005 - 1:24 PM -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

I may have been running low boost before due to something like an exhaust leak...and then once fixed I am now running at what would be considered normal boost, right?! I can work with that. But if that was the case, shouldn't the boost jump up to 12 rather than slowly walk to 12? I had a friend help me out with the wiring harness. He changed about 5 pins. He de-pinned the stock harness and swapped them around into the correct configuration for the ecu. He ran 1 wire to the ignition. He had to also change some wiring within the fuse box under the hood. There is a resistor pack that comes in the ST205, that the stock car didn't have. He added the wires and the pins into the connectors within the fuse box. Plugged everything back and .......off and boosting! |

I think it was because I changed from Toyo's to the Perelli's and they sat different. I adjusted the height on them and the ride is a little stffer, I have increased rake, and the tires are cleared. Great in corners. |

you said your friend did something to the wastegate to trick it. put all that back to stock. that maybe why your creeping to 12psi and not just hitting it. or just install in a boost controler and set it to 16psi.
good to know that the 3rd gen swap needs wiring too. i always wanted to know if it was plug and play or not. edit: does your cel light work? is it throwing any codes? This post has been edited by lagos: Dec 5, 2005 - 11:24 PM -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

Yes, it works. I had it checked and was told it is saying there is something wrong with the abs. They used the codes from a 95 MR2, though. Not sure if that was right. It is still on as I am not sure what is wrong. The clip I got did not have ABS, so I think it is a bogus reading. I took that T out when I ran it the first night. I was at 7. put the t in and went to 10. Then I jumped up to 14 in the same configuration (the next day, somehow). Took the t out and it dropped down to 12. I had been running for a year at 7 pounds, then by changing the stud, de-cating the downpipe, putting a crush gasket from the downpipe to the exhaust - I am at 12. read that to check your cel codes. you were probably put into low boost mode becasue of the cel. youve had the car for a year now running only 7psi? why didnt you read up more about what the engine can do and turn up the boost to what it should be run at? adding a 3in exhaust and gutting the cats will increase your boost. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

Since you pointed out it should be at 12, I think they were referring to the ST165. I found that was stock at 7 and max at 9.7 The link isn't working right now, I will keep trying, server may be down?! This post has been edited by Green_MachToy: Dec 6, 2005 - 12:15 AM |
