I HATE abs.... alot! and I need some extra room under the hood.

Been thinking about removing the abs on my car.. my question is has anyone done this before and what where your probs or results??

Are you talking about just unpluggin the electronics?

Or scrapping the actually mechanical stuff?

Don't take off your abs, it's good for a lot of stuff. If you really want to remove it, all you have to do is pull the ABS fuse. Try it like that awhile to see if it's what you really want. If it is, it should just be a matter of taking out the box and capping the lines. I don't see why you'd really want to scrap it though. If you ever resell, it'll hurt your value.

not on a celi .. but did it on one of my cousins cars.... he too wanted/need extra room in the engine bay .... we took out all the lines... the control module all we left where the axles ..... it was pretty easy ... but we did brake alot of the lines to get the out .. and head to redo some of th e brake lines...

Oh I know its what I want biggrin.gif I personally think ABS is dangerous... ya I know its safer satistically but I don't feel in control with it, I would rather lock up the tires that have no clue when I'm actually gonna stop. As for resale... well think I prolly already have hurt its value wink.gif

Ya I know what's involved with it, I'm just more interested if anyone on here has done it to a celi and if they had any probs with it.

For now I'm gonna leave it but I can't imagine leaving it in for too much longer, Im gonna be puttin a new intake manifold on prolly this spring and thinkin about doing it then when I have the space opened up behind the motor... well see though smile.gif

ummm, can someone explain the concept of wheel locking up?? wat exatcly does it do? and how do u unlcok the wheels?

they dont actualy "lock" its just when the wheel stops moving while the car slides forward still. its like ripping on the e-brake while doing like 15-20mph

when you stomp on the brakes and hold the pedal down, the wheels "lock up" or stop moving, and you create a skid. To "unlock" the brakes, take your foot off the pedal.

as for the topic, removing the actuator unit under the hood wouldn't be so difficult. Just unbolt and disconnect sensors (also one for each wheel), although there are fluid lines that go through it (so you would have to bypass the actuator and reconnect the lines). The ABS ECU is under the CC unit (on the floor) with 2 harnessess, 1 with 16 pins and the other with 26 pins. (the ABS and the SRS systems are seperate from the main ECU). Search & destroy and good luck.

hmm.. maybe you shouldn't be driving if abs becomes a constant problem.
wheel lockup(wheel as in tires, not steering wheel) happens when the force of your brakes, along with your cars speed, exceeds the max gripping point of your tires, and so your tires stop rotating(im pretty sure we've all done this when we were young with our pedal bikes), but your car is still moving. this is really really bad because when this happens, your stopping distance is increased bigtime. not only do you stop further, but you lose almost all control of your car, that is, if you're locking the front brakes, which happens very easily, especially in wet/icy conditions. when your tires stop moving, your your tires lose the ability to steer because they can't point your car where to go anymore. they might point in a direction, but thats pretty useless without having the tires actually spinning. its pretty much like sliding a rectangle block of wood around, even if you slide it at 45% angle, it'll still slide in the direction you pushed it, and not the direction its pointing to. ever go down a snowy hill on a crazy carpet, only not being able to actually steer the thing very well, and often even spinning while going down? same effect. but then some might say "then why the hell can skiis, snowboards, and GTs have control?" its because they are digging/carving into the snow. thats why in icy areas in a hill/mountain, where you cant carve into it, you can easily slip and fall, or go straight when trying to turn.
now what abs(stands for Anti Braking System) does, is unlock your brakes so that you can gain control, and apply the brakes again at whatever force youre putting on them. what most people do though, its push the brakes even harder, which will only make them lock up worse.
now an easy way(easy with experience) to overcome the oh so awsome abs is to not let it even activate. if it turns on, that means youre locking up your brakes, and youre pushing too hard on the peddle. it may seem scary not pushing the brakes as hard as possible, but trust me, its even more scary coming up on something and barely having your car slow down at all and not being able to turn/swirve to avoid it. if youre too scared to do this, and your abs(if you have it) does happen to activate, you should hear, and feel, it pulse. instinct tells you to push even harder on the brakes because brakes=stopping, but you have to go against it and slightly let off of them so that they stop locking up. same with a car without abs. if you feel yourself sliding, let off the brakes and then apply them again, but at a lesser force. a good thing to do also, is to not brake suddenly, but push it almost as if it was your gas pedal, in a manual car and youre starting from a stop. gradually going up to the max gripping point of your tires you'll have a better chance not totally going past it.

SSJChar, you're confused:
ABS = Anti-Lock Braking System

As far as feeling out of control with ABS that's just a mental roadblock you'll have to overcome. Every test I've seen shows decreased stopping distance with ABS. Locking up the tires is never the best way to stop unless you're a Hollywood stunt driver.

from what i know, abs actually does stand for anti braking system, but they call it anti lock brakes so not to confuse people into thinking they wont be able to stop.

ABS is the greatest thing in the braking system. Why would you want to remove it now? I wish my car came with ABS, cause that means I could brake like a pro at a rookie level. rolleyes.gif

Actually statistically ABS is no safer because people are not educated on how to use it. An average driver feels that weird vibrating brake pedal and freaks out and steps off the pedal. If you know how to drive a car with ABS then it is better, but for the average driver its worse.

I know how to remove the system and what needs to be replaced. I am more interested in hearing peoples post removal probs/feeback.

like I have said before I HATE abs. I learned to drive in a 80 Caddy (non abs) in the midwest which means TONS of snow, I also have a really bad habit is driving around for HOURS in the snow playin biggrin.gif LOL last year I pulled almost a 2 block slide sideways down a 4lane oneway in the celi! it was badass! was doin aprox 60-70 mph and yes it was intentional... unforantly that was the same nite I TRASHED my front lip tryin to be a snow plow... but hell it was fun and and a easy fix.

I however dont want the ABS and I also dont want this thread to turn into a "well thats a stupid idea" type of thing, I personally perfer driving cars with no ABS because its easier to control the car IMO (yours may differ and thats perfectly fine), there are plenty of ways to correct the car even if your locked up if your accustom to that style of driving, which I am.

So if anyone has any useful info to offer please do wink.gif

Even though Anti-Lock Braking Systems are handy, I find that I prefer to drive cars without. Neither of my Celicas had ABS, nor my Mustang or truck. My Prelude did but I never drove the car hard enough to use it. If you know what you're doing without ABS then you're perfectly fine without, and can stop just as fast as a car with ABS. Also to relate it to a power steering thread I was reading earlier, ABS is another one of those things that a lot of purebread racing cars don't have.

And SSJChar, I don't know where you learned how to drive a car with ABS, but you're going to rearend someone someday. When ABS works, yes it means that the brakes are at the point of locking up but you just keep pushing the brake the same amount that you are. The whole reason the ABS system is there is to keep the wheels from locking up, the driver doesn't have to do anything but hold the brake pedal down. If you lighten up on the brakes when the ABS starts to work you'll lose stopping power. Your wheels will never lock up on an ABS system and if they do, you might want to be calling your mechanic.

i might have worded it strangely, but i dont mean they will lock up since thats the whole point of abs. and when i say ease up on the brakes, I mean a tiny bit just so the abs wont be going off since the guy above said he doesn't want it happening, tiny bit as in just enough to make the abs not fire, or stop activating i guess. a way to have abs, but not use it.

LOL, I see what you're talking about... You are a Davenport stunt driver. That's cool. I can see how ABS would interfere with your stunts. If I were out all day doing 360s and 720s I probably would hate ABS too. Good luck with your conversion.

ABS = Antiblockiersystem

Invented by our friends in Germany. Roughly translated, it's Anti-Skid system.

And for road use, I'd keep it personally.

Personally, I think ABS is unsafe. I know two people who have wrecked celi's due to ABS locking up - holly and ashley (in that f'd alltrac)
