I use to drive like an ass, shift around 4k, and speed a lot.. Got around 26mpg.. Then as gas prices started going up, I started driving slower and shifting around 2500-3.. ended up getting like 32.. so now just driving normal as inbetween, Im getting around 29-30. But I also have an ST with 147k.

well, i shift around 2500-2800, and i drive 45 in 4th goin steady in town, and i live about 15 miles away from the city, and i can go 2 weeks before i have to fill up again. If you can keep ur rpms steady around 2700-3000, you will get excellent gas mileage. If i lived in town, i wouldnt have to fill up for almost 4 weeks, i guarantee it.

With my "Manu-Matic" style tranny and torque converter I can control where it shifts without harm, so I guess I can actually respond even though my engine is toast lol. I averaged like 26 when driving it semi-hard and like 31 when driving it really nice like. I do a lot of highway miles though.

I don't understand how you get better mileage if you drive at highway speeds, because when I drive on the highway I'm at ~3500-4000 RPM in 5th. When I'm driving local streets I'm usually around ~2000-3000 RPM and I'm not working the engine as hard, but I'm getting lower gas mileage?

Starting and Stopping in the city causes your car to become inefficient. Thats why hybrids shut their engines off at stop lights and start up when you take your foot off the brake. When your on the highway getting good gas mileage...your not starting or stopping, just pure going forward engine use. |

I get around 30-35 MPG on my 4age swap.
But thats only when Im really cheerishing it. The thing is the engine gives off a nasty jerk forward when I go past 3K RPM and then shift. This happens around 1-3 gear. It also happens when I tap the gas pedal really quick and then hold it down. The car really flies forward! Tottaly different from the 7a engine. Then again this engine is only a Premium eater. Dam my pennies are all drained now....................... |

If im not wrong, toyotas are made to get better speed and mpg on highways and at higher speeds. My Auto shifts into 5th gear on the highway exactly at 80mph, and I have a high RPM around 4k. |

i dont get why you guys get so good gas mileage. is keeping the rpms as low as possible not the best way, ie 35mph in 5th at like 2300rpm?

26.7 mpg on my last fill up on the 3SGTE at 10psi, a mix of highway and city driving. Shifting depending on how I felt... Sometimes, at 6k others, at 3k... ashley knows.

Dont care what gas milage I get, no short shifting and poncing about, dont concentrate on what RPM`s I shift....why???? shift when you feel your car needs to change gear thats it. Cars are meant to be driven, have fun and enjoy your car...after all thats why we are car enthusiasts. If you wanna conserve fuel, buy a little baby honda or something that drives forever on a teaspoon of fuel and would lull you to sleep in a thunder storm. I`d rather get out of my car with a smile on my face than worrying about how much fuel I just saved driving like miss daisy.
