I use Mobil1 10W30 full synthetic motor oil in my car. The general idea that I get is that fully synthetic oil is recommended for people who drive their cars hard.

I use what coomer uses, I hear though that you want to switch to 5w30 if you drive in the winter, because it's easier to start up. Gotta say, I lika the synthetic.

castrol Syntec 5w30 is what i use. it says use 5w30 in the instruction manual. synthetic oil has smaller molecules or something so it is a better lubricant and wont break down like normal oil. i couldnt tell u either way if its actually better, but then again, is the extra 5 bucks for the synthetic oil really that bad? to tell u the truth i picked catrol syntec cuz it has a really cool bottle and i heard valvoline was not the best oil. so yea synthetic is best. if u run ur car hard/ want performance go synthetic, if u just drive like a normal person take ur pick. synthetic is better but i dont think it makes that much of a difference, maybe preserve ur engine a lil longer.

I think if you change your oil on time, your engine's going to last a long time regardless. The repair manuals say change it every 6,500 miles for highway driving and 3750 for hard driving. I change mine every 3000-3500. So is synthetic necessary? Also, is it true if you go synthetic, you can never go back to regular?

mobil here. 10W30 like it is stamped on the cap.
I only change the oil every 15 to 20,000 km, but I swap the filters every 5k. The oil does not break down, just gets dirty. Ends up being cheaper than running conventional oil. jus my $0.02 |

Not true at all, when you hit high mileage you should change to high-mileage oil. Is it necessary? Eh, probably not. |

Amsoil 5W30 HD series 3000, Yes, Synthetic is 'worth it' I wont run anything else, and haven't since about 1976...and mileage be damned, if its in good shape, put synthetic in it. I put 170k miles on my last car, 87 Mazda 626lx coupe, ran Amsoil since it was new, changed the oil 1/year, filter every 6 months, lost all the water one night and cracked the head at 162k, when I took it apart, there was NO measurable wear inside, no sludge, no build-up, absolutely no hint of a ridge in the cylinders, bearings looked new, end-gap on the old rings was .003 out of factory spec. (NEW rings from Sealed Power were at .004 outside spec), (New Mazda rings were at .011 gap, exactly mid-point of .008-.014 factory tolerance. Basically NO wear! no telling how far it would have went, my daughter is driving it now, judging from all the new dents, I think the body will go before the motor...

I agree with 97GTinKC - Amsoil is a good way to go. I ran nothing else in my corolla GT for 6 years with an AmsOil filter change every 6 months and an Oil change every 12 months. Never had a single problem with that car - those were the days, young, carefree, 4AGE, 960Kg, 7700 redline . . .

I'm doing workstudy at school and I sometimes help out with a really smart technician. He uses this original stuff called castrol X. Its supposed to be the very first synt. from castrol. Its actually green Motor OIL! GREEN! This stuff is actually 0W30!!!!! He has like 74 bottles at home and is hogging it all too himself!
Makes me jealouse tho, but as he says, its not very good for engines that are running on VVT and vtech systems. Cause this stuff is like water, and cleans out the engine like bleach. This stuff actually eats all the debris and gunk build up inside the engines. The thing with VVt is that the cam advance won't work cause it isn't thick enough to be shot through the engine like normal oil can do. Syntech is is awesome, but very expensive. I would just stick to normal, oil to save money, but I'll go with syn. cause I drive really hard too. ![]() |

This still hasn't made it to "hot topic" status yet though, lol. I use Castrol full synthetic 10w30. I'm switching to Mobil 1. I did some research and it seems best for the money. -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

i switched to a synthetice/natural blend.....
this is the facts i have experinced with oil's being around engine from when i was a little kid to now... can you go back to natural from synthetic? ... Yes you can ... **** you even mix it if you have to ... do you need to switch to high mileage oil once your engine goes oer 100k... No ... if you change you oil when it changes color .. you engine will last longer then the car... when to change oil? --- when it changes color ... fook that mile bs.... the miles you travel don't really tell you how have driven .. i have gone 5k miles and not changed oil cause the color is still like honey ... i have old changed oil after 30 miles cause it was black drove the car super hard for a few hours on a track .... which oil is the best? which bottled water is the best? use what you like ... as long as it has the ASE stamp on the back of the bottle -------------------- |
