Unless you have spent a couple thouasand converting your headlights to use gas arc discharge technology, no HID bulb will work in your car properly.

HID is a completely different technology than the halogen bulbs Celicas all use. If it has a filament in the bulb, it's not HID. Since the page wouldn't respond, my guess would be it's yet another "HID" bulb which is actually a blue-tinted halogen bulb. These are crap. They initially produce the same light as a halogen bulb, then filter out the lower frequencies to change the colour. The trouble is, by cutting out the lower light wavelengths, you cut the amount of light by which you're supposed to be able to see.

Projectors sort of look like HID, but they're still halogen bulbs, just a better design than the reflector designs on most cars.

actually i run 6000k philips HID's and there are no problems. they cost about $400 dollars and no conversion is needed as long as you get 9006 bulb size....pics at www.cardomain.com/id/chrome94celica...i've got plenty of friends who have converted theirs. the set up is a bit different, it has ballasts and some different wiring, but the housing is unaltered.

if your getting and HID Conversion kit just make sure they are 9006 for you lows. and 9005 for your highs.... i can't tell if the link was for a conversion kit or just HID look bulbs.. but eaither way .. as long as they are 9005/6 they should fit... and if they are just the HID look bulbs that the wattage aren't over the stock .. cause you could melt you harness ..

Hmph, take a reflector housing designed for a filament bulb and install a gas discharge bulb....think the beam pattern's going to be more than a bit off. Mind you, with the lousy DOT pattern the U.S. demands, who could tell?

That assumes, of course, you've altered the wiring harness enough to convert standard car power to the much different voltages required by HID...

the beam pattern is the same becuase the bulbs are the same size...9006...NO ADJUSTMENT of any kind is needed...but hey i don't care i like being the only one with HID's since everybody else thinks it's such a hard thing to do...just tryin to tell you it's nearly plug and play and since you don't have em in your car how would you know? another thing...HID's use 35watts compared to the 60-65 your factorys or aftermarkets use and actually burn cooler...again there is no danger whatsoever to your housings or harnesses....i've had em for over a year...a friend has em in his supra...another in his mr2...no adjustments...sorry for sounding like a dick, but it's really not that complex of a thing and people spread alot of fiction about em.

sorry. i'm just curious.. so you're using the HID kit with stock reflector housing? doesn't it glare at oncoming cars/cars in front of you?

because i thought this was why plug ang play HID kits were made illegal. because they kept blinding people and melting harnesses

i unno.. i while back i was reading a bit on HIDs and that was what i came to understand... was always told it's better to retrofit projectors than just using a kit

not sure if the illegal kits are AM kits while the ones that are ok are OEM kits?

do celica projectors work with HIDs?

There is no possible way for a halogen bulb with a tungsten filament, and a xenon bulb using arc discharges between two electrodes to have the same pattern of light output.

Halogen is not the same as HID. The base may be the same, but the bulb itself is not. Put it this way, a compact fluorescent can fit into the same base as an incasdescent, but the shape of the light it produces is different. Car lights, being much more carefully shaped, are even more subject to this reality.

Car headlight reflectors are sensitive enough that even a cheap bulb has a noticably different beam pattern than a high-quality bulb -- filament geometry is that important. You're applying a bulb that has no filament at all into a housing designed to shape the light coming out of a burning filament.

Admittedly, the American DOT standard is such a lousy beam pattern that you might not notice it, but other drivers will.

I'll stick with my projectors and my jdm cleared high beams. look better then the stock headlights and way brighter. Don't know if there brighter then the hid bulbs but looks cooler i think. smile.gif

is this directed at me?

no i don't know it all. that's why i was asking questions.

when did i ever say factory halogens are better?

in fact. i am very interested in getting HIDs too. just that i don't want to do it the wrong way.

(btw, i checked out ur cardomain site... no photos of your HID beam output? was hoping to see some as i'm really interested seeing how they look with celica projectors/reflectors)

I know that HIDs can go in both projectors and reflectors. but there are HD projectors, HID reflectors, then there are halogen projectors and halogen reflectors. but they don't all work WELL with HIDs. sure you can install HIDs into anything but the results MAY be bad... i don't know. maybe the halogen reflectors and projectors made for a celica won't cause glare as much as other cars. i have no idea

stock halogens will most likely give glare too. however HIDs are about.. i dunno.. 20x brighter? which is why if it scatters it blinds people and is a bigger problem becaue of being SO bright. if you don't have clear lenses it will scatter too.

a while back a lot of PnP HID kits were made illegal because there were a lot of cheap and imitation parts being sold as well as people were installing them wrong and thus it melted harnesses and blinded people. here's a list of a few of them:
RM Racing
Astex USA
Kmax International
FET, Inc.
J. Liu LLC
Gourmet Garage
JC Whitney
Lighting Research
SPW Industries, Inc.
Pacific Micro-lite
McCulloch Motors, Inc.
Santeca Electronics
JF Manufacturing
Streetglow, Inc.
Outback Products, Inc.
Nu Performance
GR Motorsports, Inc.
Global Premier
New Clor
Importhookup.com
DG International
MTC Lighting
Umnitza
Liteglow
American Products Company

when you aim your headlights straight against a wall a 20 meters away is the light scattered all over the place? if yes, chances are that it will give oncoming drivers glare.

**i'm really interested in how the beam pattern looks like for those of you with HIDs... could some people post some good ones? (please indicate if you have stock housings or the st205 projector housings**

i'm not saying HIDs are bad. as long as their done right it's fine. as i said before i'm interested in them too. i just want to know how they look like on a celica before making a decision if people post pictures of their beam pattern and it looks good i'll 99% get HIDs. if they look really bad. i'll have to decide what to do.

here are some examples of kits that caused glare in stock houseings:

here are how they SHOULD look like:

here's another comparison pic:
user posted image

i've seen proper retrofitting done forconsiderably less than 1000... (like 300-700 depending on quality of equipment/install etc) so this should be doable on a celica as well

i'm not trying to make people scared of doing this stuff... i just hope people are doing it right and have courtesy for others on the road

(o, and incase anyone was wondering.. those aren't pics i made... got them off of hidplanet)

no that wasn't directed at you...and i'll take some pics of mine as soon as i can come up with a camera....it looks like all those pics you have of the ones with sharp cutoff are obviously projectors...and yes this looks much better but also comes with a nice pricetag of about a grand for our cars...the whole discussion was whether or not they were "dangerous" or even worked properly...which i know they do...obviously they'd look much better in projectors...another thing...they pic you have which says "large hot spots" "glare" is awfully close to the garage door don't you think....if that car was backed up a bit wouldn't the light spread out and merge together in the middle? just some thoughts...

yea, those pics are of retrofitted projector HIDs but that's just to show the difference.
i'm quite sure it won't cost a grand tho. not sure why i haven't seen people retro HID projectors into our cars yet as it's possible to get an oem kit with a set of bosch (BMW 3series projectors) or a set of valeo HID projectors with hella/phillips ballasts, d2s bulbs, ballast onnectors/mounts/covers all for < 400... can our stock housings be sanded down or is it made of real glass? i dunno..

as for the pic about hot spots and glare... i think moving back won't help. the pic with the neon with 8k HIDs is further back but there are still hot spots

i dunno... i saw a pic of a celi with HIDs using st205 projectors... it wasn't too bad from the pic. but i would need better pics to really see...
