Remote Start is in! Options

Hi,
I just finished up installing the remote start portion of my Autopage RS-650 alarm, and I just thought I'd let you guys know that it is indeed possible and isn't very hard to do, even on a 5-speed like mine. I really love my alarm and all of its features, and I'd recommend the Autopage RS-650, because it's a great alarm for the price.

However, it is dangerous and you should definitely, definitely install some sort of safety device so that you don't start your car while it is in gear. I currently don't have one on my car because I'm waiting for two relays with diodes to come in to make a momentary push button safety switch, but as soon as that stuff comes in, it's going in my car, so that my car is at least somewhat safe. What I am going to have is a push button switch that will need to be pushed in when I plan on remote starting the car. When that button is pressed, it will complete a circuit which will allow the car to start, otherwise the car will not start. And once the car does start, that circuit will be broken again, requiring me to push in the button again in order to have the car remote start again. This way, I will remember to put the car in neutral when I push the button. It's not fail-proof, but it is much safer than having nothing at all. I considered installing a reed switch that will be grounded only when the car is in neutral, but because of the shifter assembly design, it would be very hard to install. This is way safer as long as it is done right. Also, some companies make remote start units designed specifically for manual transmission cars. These units use a system where you leave your car running for a little bit once the key is out of the ignition, and once you're out of the car and the doors are closed and you arm the alarm, it will turn off your car, ensuring that your car is ready to be remote started. This is probably the safest way to remote start a car.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know that remote start can be installed fairly easily on a sixth generation Celica. I would create a how-to article, but from the information I gathered, I'm not sure if all the wiring colors are the same depending on year and type, and I wouldn't want anyone to hook up anything wrong and fry their car's electrical system just because the wiring colors are different. If you're going to work on your car's wiring, get a multimeter and test everything twice, and then do it again.

However, I do have wiring info direct from DEI(which I found to be 100% completely accurate when compared to my car's wiring), which I could post on here if you guys want it. I also have learned a great deal about installing remote start on our cars, so if anyone has any questions, please ask and I'll try to answer them.

My alarm costed me $84.99, and I got it from a user named mudah on eBay.

I just scanned the instruction manual's diagram, and then added some comments to it, and it is below. Keep in mind that the wiring colors for your car may be different, so test every wire very carefully.



And to 94TRDCeli, you can get keyless entry systems for very good prices on eBay. For almost a year, I had a Crimestopper CS-845RKE that I got for around $40 I believe on eBay, and it was perfect for what I needed it for.

hey coomer, wouldnt a turbo timer be a feasible option as a safety measure? this way u would definitly have to leave ur car in neutral??

Happy for ya, Cooma'. Good job! Maybe you could make a small .mpeg movie thing of it starting, that would rule if you have a digital video-camera.

Yes, that would be a feasible option too. However, I don't have a turbo and I'm not going to get one, so I would be spending a lot of money just to make my remote start safer. I'm very, very close to having my safety pushbutton switch completely hooked up anyways. I just have to solder on the switch, and then it'll be all set.
