A differential is a part that allows two wheels opposite one another to turn at different speeds. This is necessary for a number of reasons but the most important is that during turning, the outside wheel will turn faster since it has more ground to cover. If there was no differential (or a locked differential) the wheels would turn at exactly the same speed and one tire would bounce during cornering. As a result, many cars come with "open" differentials so that the wheels are completely independent. The problem with an open differential is that it is not the best for traction. If one wheel is on loose pavement and begins to spin, the other wheel will get most of the power and the power distribution will be very unbalanced. To combat this, the limited slip differential was created (there are more than 15 different types of LSD's). This gives the benefit of an open differential for turning while providing better traction for performance reasons. HTH.

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.
