I brought her in for new brakes all around, wheel balance, oil change and CV joint.

He says to me, "So what's wrong with your brakes?" I said I dunno, they felt weird, 146k miles with no service records." He said there are plenty of brake life left, all around. smile.gif I'll gladly pay him for his time looking at them, but I have a feeling he is such a stand-up guy he won't even charge me for that time.

Hey I'm an enthusiast not a car mechanic!

Good to see he's honest, some mechanics aren't so reliable. When I used to take my car to a mechanic they were excellent, and would invite me right in the shop to watch them work on it to learn. Very cool people, and knowledgable at that. However theres plenty of people that'll take it somewhere and get scammed, I've seen it far too often, like $920 for a brake job. wink.gif

Now of course I'm the driver and the mechanic.

alot of mechanics are on the "if its not broken, lets tell them it is because there probably too stupid to know its not" style of thinking.

At least you guys aren't chicks! We can get screwed worse than anyone by mechanics figuring "girls don't know anything." I admit, I really didn't used to know anything...now that I'm dating a mechanics son, though, I really don't have a choice, lol. I can recommend a mechanic in Los Angeles that I know doesn't do that crap...and if any of you ever move down here then don't worry, my mechanic will hook you up smile.gif

He even gives you rides while your car is in his shop! lol...I love him...

My mechanic closed his shop. Now I don't have a mechanic. I don't know who I can or cannot trust. I already know who I can't trust, and thats the stealership.

you know, i used to think that too back when i was kind of new to cars. later on i learned that normally they do tell you the truth (unless they made a mistake) about the diagnosis of the problem, and dont try to lie about what is and isint broken.

the way that they do ripp you off, is in the cost of parts and laybor for a simple job. something as easy to do as a cap, rotor, and plug wire change, will end up on your bill as $100+ in laybor alone. they also make a profit on the parts they install. they normally try to keep that a secret and pretend that they are only making money from the laybor alone. thats how they really cheat you. but hey, its a business and they have to make money to keep the place running.
