I need to know why faq had to shorten his axles from the ae101 4a-gze to fit the celi and coom and all the others with the 20v 4a didnt. the gze is from the levin. i mean, why is it that the gze is so much harder to swap in an st than a 20v? and i dont want to hear that its cuz so many ppl have done it and its documented. i mean, besides the wiring, there should be much difference, right?

The tranny that comes with the 4AGZE is called the E51, or E58, I can't remember right now. Actually I think it's the E58. Either way, the tranny that comes with the 20v is the C56, or in some cases, the C160, which are the same design as the C52 in the Celica ST. Therefore, the C-series bolts right in with no custom parts.

Also, a C52 tranny can be used with a 4AGZE, it bolts right up and is quite sturdy.

The E58 that comes with the 4AGZE could be used, however. You will need a couple of custom mounts, since they are different, and in theory you *could* be able to use the driver's side axle from a Mk1 MR2 Supercharged, and the passenger side axle from a Mk2 MR2 Turbo with LSD. I haven't actually tested that yet, and probably the lengths wouldn't be right, but at least you have something to start with. You can then have someone like Moser Engineering make you custom axle bars and you'd be set.

Or, if you can get the whole front clip, you should be able to make the stock axles work.

In any case, if a stock Toyota axle won't fit, custom axle bars can be made up by Moser Engineering for $300 for the set, and then the axles can be reassembled with the new bar.

*edit* A couple more things. The E58 tranny has the same internals as the E153, which means that it's a very strong tranny, the best choice if you can make it work. Further, it appears that most if not all of the E58 trannys come with a helical LSD stock, which is great!

o. so if i did a manual swap(now i would have a manual c52) and i do my little turbo project on my 7a... and it blows eventually(it has a lot of miles and dunno how long it'll last), i can get a gze front clip, keep the celica st tranny and just swap the motor, do the wiring and not have to mess with the tranny???

EDIT: yeah, the one with the ae101gze is e58.

and same with the 20v right? youd be able to keep the stock c52 tranny and not mess with it. it'll bolt right up to the engine and everything?

Yep. Some 20V motors actually came with C52 trannies.

I've wished I had an ST for these reasons. I can see myself doing a 20v swap a lot quicker than a 3sgte or 3sge swap. But, my GT has bigger brakes, better suspension, cooler wheels, leather, bla bla bla. Still kinda want a 20v Celica. Anyone want to trade?

I'll trade you.

Or, just swap a 20v into your GT. biggrin.gif

Yeap, that's right.

By the way, I have a C52 here if you're looking for one.

The Mk1 MR2 Supercharged has the E51.

If I were to put a 20v in my car, I would have to change transmitions and make custom mounts all over the place. I just don't feel like doing that. Dr Tweak, if you have a 20v Celica that's in as good a shape as my GT, we can talk about trading. My car is show room quality. It has been loved since the day is was brought home, by me and the original owner.

Well, my '95 ST is certainly not showroom quality, nor does it have a 20v! smile.gif

Sure you can, but you need to put a the smaller, 8-bolt 4AGE flywheel on the engine. The tranny will then bolt right up.

Do you think they are in the same condition? Mine, and your cars?

I was also wondering, would it be so hard to put a 20v in my car? I'd haff to run a new transmition, and new mounts. Would it be harder than the 3sgte swap?

There are so many parts for the 20v 4age. I want one now. I'm going to do research on putting one in the Celica.

It'd be much easier than a 3SGTE. Just think about all the A-engine related parts that are available from all the ST Celicas getting 3SGTEs!!! LOL

Seriously, you would need the ST tranny and axles, maybe the shift linkage (not sure on that one), the wiring would have to be done (just send it to me, $350 shipped back to you and I can bang it out in a few days), and all the ST mounts. Exhaust hookup and some odds and ends, and that's about it!
