as a few of you know, I have no clue when it comes to distributorless ignition. I can do distributors (all I have ever worked with) but the distributorless thing.... I couldn't find the answers I was looking for in my research.

SO, with that said:

Lets say I have a Stock 7afe and I want to convert it over to distributorless ignition (which would be useless for the most part, but this is for the sake of understanding the process.) What would I do, and what would I need?

Any comments would be great.

Megasquirt and EDIS. Do some research online and you'll find all you need. smile.gif

BTW I'm doing this setup on a 4AGE silvertop shortly.

You'll need a computer that understands DIS (direct ignition system) input/output and the different trigger set-ups. After that, you'll need the actual triggering system, be it a crank sensor, VR sensor and toothed wheel, Flywheel sensor, cam sensor, etc... but some sort of sensor that can read the engine's position. Then you'll need to mess with piles of wires...

Some are easier than others... but it's pointless to do DIS ONLY. The only time DIS is useful, is if you have a way of tuning ignition advance/retard... which can make a bit of power... Megasquirt'n'EDIS is proving itself to be quite simple (I'll make a post about my AE86 20V sooner or later)...

ignition creates spark. Doesn't matter what system is making it. What does matter, is tuning.

on any engine where knock is becoming a problem, fine tuning the ign is a great way to make power. thers a few people on the 7th gen boards running an upgraded ignition (comes with DIS stock) because they were having some kind of trouble with F/I blowing out sparks or something (note: these are guys running gt35s and bigger and 20+ lbs of boost)

its nothing but amazing for tuning.

yup

its all the same, a powerful spark is a powerful spark, doesnt matter where it comes from

example

two friends of mine each have a 9 second turbo mustang. one runs an msd distributor, the other has the factory ignition from an 04 cobra(ford edis-8)

both are boosted, and both make abscene amounts of power

Technically a DIS system such as EDIS is much more exact than a distributor setup. Given there is not much of a power difference but its all about tunability and DIS > distributors.

Tune-ability depends entirely on the computer... the actual system making the spark has little to do with it... granted DIS systems are better for a wide range of tuning... but that's about it.
